Cinder's Story

I'm Cinder, a 43-pound medium mixed-breed girl who's still learning how to feel safe in the world. The shelter environment has been a lot for me, and I tend to stay tense and unsure when things feel busy or overwhelming.

When I'm given the chance to roam freely in a quiet space, I start to loosen up and show little glimmers of who I really am. I do best with people who approach calmly, get down on my level, and let me come to them at my own pace. Treats-especially cheese-help me feel brave, and once I decide you're someone I can trust, I'll slowly begin to open up, sniff around, and even ask for gentle attention.

I'm still figuring out what it means to be touched and loved on, so sometimes I get a bit stiff, but I truly want connection and comfort. Once I feel secure with someone, I become a completely different dog-tail wagging, eyes bright, and quietly asking for more affection when you stop paying attention to me. I'm looking for a calm, patient home with one or two adults who understand that trust takes time and that I need a consistent, steady environment to truly blossom.

A busy household or a large family would be too much for me right now, but with the right people who can help build my confidence, gently socialize me, and move at a pace that feels safe, I know I can become a loyal, loving companion. I have a sweet heart, a gentle soul, and so much potential-I just need someone willing to walk beside me as I learn to trust the world.

My adoption fee of $225+tax covers the cost of my care and stay here at the humane society.

All Pennington County residents must also pay an additional $8 licensing fee at time of adoption.

Happy Adopting!

Humane Society of The Black Hills's Adoption Policy
The adoption process may take up to one hour to complete but we’ll keep it as simple and streamlined as possible. Here are the steps when you’re considering adopting a pet: - Visit our website to see available animals or see them on-site during regular hours, seven days a week. - When you find a dog, cat or small animal you would like to spend more time with, simply call the Humane Society of the Black Hills at (605) 394-4170 for an appointment. - Occasionally, our team is able to accommodate walk-ins, but as we cannot guarantee them, it is best to call for an appointment. -During your scheduled appointment, an adoption advisor will review the animal's history with you and bring the animal to meet you for an initial visit. - A second appointment may be made for you for a variety of reasons (Ex. You have a dog at home you'd like to bring in to meet the pet next). -Once you have met a pet that you think is your perfect match and you have been approved to adopt, your adoption advisor will take you through the adoption process, and you can take your new family member home!
