Meet Cider

Cider, our 7 year old 20 pound spaniel mix, has us all rooting for him. He came to us from a local rescue after his family had to give him up. Sadly, his person had health issues and Cider was left mostly alone for months. That's hard enough for any dog, but sweet Cider is also blind and was probably very confused. We've had Cider for weeks and have watched him come out of his shell. He is a truly wonderful dog.

Cider is completely blind, but he doesn't have any pain, and adjusts to his environment quickly. Cider's foster family says that he is understandably shy at first, but is now loving and playful. He learned to navigate their home (even a few stairs) and responds well to verbal commands. Cider loves pets and snuggles and will reward his person with kisses and tail wags. He gets along great with other animals and seems to be very excited when dogs are playing around him. Due to his blindness, though, his home should have dogs that won't accidentally knock him over. Which is also why we are recommending only older kids. We haven't seen Cider around cats, but assume he'll be just fine, and we can do a meet if needed.

We have completed Cider's dental cleaning. He had to lose many painfully infected teeth, but he is much happier without them. Cider is good in the house and is not destructive and quiet. He cries in a crate, which makes sense as that's a confusing environment for someone who can't see. Cider sadly spent months having to pee inside before we got him. His foster family has been working on his potty training and he's come a long way, but should wear belly bands in the house until he masters this. We have done extensive diagnostics to rule out medical causes of the peeing in the house, and Cider is healthy. Just needs a little reminder.

Cider is heart worm negative, has had full normal blood work and is current on his flea and heartworm preventatives. A previous adopter of a Stumptown Stray (Nemo!) wanted to pay forward his adoption fee, so the fee is already covered for Cider.
