Cider's Story

A shelter reached out for help with this elegant beauty because of her severely underweight condition and terrified behavior when she was rescued. Here are her shelter notes: "This girl entered our care after her owner passed away. She is emaciated with her spine, ribs and hip bones showing. She is extremely terrified and shut down at the shelter. She has a possible injury on her paws. This girl urgently needs placement with an adopter, rescue or foster where she can learn to trust and experience much needed TLC." Thank you shelter and transport angels for getting Cider to us.

Cider was just 14 pounds when rescued, about half of what she should be at a healthy weight, and in the short time she's been at Dogwood, she's gained 6 pounds. She's still thin at 20 pounds and probably needs to gain another 5-10 pounds to be at a healthy weight. She was scared on arrival, but easy to handle and is warming up nicely. She's on a slow refeeding program to regain her weight without overwhelming her system. Organ failure is not uncommon in severely emaciated dogs, although we've had good luck with them and she is stable at this time. And what a sweetheart she is now that she feels safe. She has the longest tail and it wags A LOT! She loves foster mom and is gaining confidence meeting new people. She didn't know much on arrival, but she's learning fast. Cider does show some resource guarding, possibly because of her ordeal and long term lack of food, and will do best in a patient adult home with the leadership to set her up to win.

Cider LOVES her crate. It's where her warm, soft bed is. It's where her frequent small meals are served. And it's where she likes to rest and recover from her horrible ordeal. She has reached the point where instead of inhaling every scrap of food in sight, she sometimes leaves some because she knows there will always be more. Cider looks a lot like a Chihuahua, but is much taller with curvy lines and elegant features giving her an almost Sighthound look. She's about a year old.

Applications at:

http://dogwoodanimalrescue.org/adoption-application-dogs/

You can follow us on social media at:

https://.www.instagram.com/dogwoodanimalrescue/
https://.www.facebook.com/.DogwoodAnimalRescue/

Making a difference, one animal at a time.
