We had no foster spots and only paid boarding to offer ... but these two guys had apparently suffered neglect and/or mistreatment and needed the special time and attention a foster family offers. They had passed SAFER temperament testing and shown no aggression whatsoever (with the exception of a little food bowl guarding) but were shy with human contact. The shelter refused to give up on them, and saw them both really "come around" during their time at the shelter. The shelter put a lot of time, faith and love into them and hated to think they'd be lost when space and time were no longer on their time. We agreed So they were "first up to bat" when we had two new foster spots open up. Both have surprised us VERY pleasantly since the moment they were picked up at the shelter by their new foster families! Both are good with other dogs and appear to be cat-friendly!
Both Chukchi and Ben are estimated to be under 2 years old, so they're still little more than pups! :)
CHUKCHI's Foster Mom Says: Despite all of the warnings about his shyness, Chukchi came to me as soon as I visited him in the shelter. He shook my hand and followed me to the car, where he was an excellent passenger. In fact, being in the car is one of his favorite things. He gets along fine with our dog Max and in fact follows him around like his long lost brother. They are sleeping together, playing and sharing toys. I took him to the park to get some play and exercise. No one was there at first and he just stayed with Max. A few dogs came in and he just ignored them, staying at Max’s side. He came to me for a pat on the head when Max did. When he lets people pet him he does this “growly” thing that could be intimidating, but it is almost like he is purring – talking because he enjoys being petted. He can be an escape artist (as all huskies are), but does not run when he gets out. We have been able to walk right up to him and leash him. Amazing but true. There was some talk about food aggression, but we have not had any problems with that at all.
UPDATE: Chukchi is OK with cats!!! Our cat Ozzy was hissing and blocking the hallway when I cleared Ozzy out. Chukchi even seemed a little distressed by Ozzy’s constant growling and was whining and coming to me for reassurance. He tries to ignore the big meanie. Chukchi has great house manners, no marking his territory, and he lies down by Max when left alone.
The latest park visit went even better than before. He is overcoming his shyness and is starting to play with other dogs instead of just following Max around. He met a big Mal and ignored him when he huffed at him. A very good sign – even when another male is posturing next to him it did not come to blows. We found that, like many huskies, he likes to play in his water dish. Bring an extra towel!
Chuck and Max are good friends now and Chuck has learned how to PLAY! All the dominance and posturing is over. They eat out of each others bowls and sleep side by side. Chuck is very good in the house and ignores our two cats, but will chase outside cats that run. He will jump on the couch and snuggle down if you don't object, but if you tell him to get down he will with a "What?” Chuck must have been abused because he is shy around new people when he is on a leash and can't get away, but if you give him time and let him check the new person out first he becomes their buddy quickly. He will probably need a vet he can get to know and feel safe with. He is free fed and doesn't overeat. He is good on a leash. Keep the gate latched! Chuck will check to see if he can wander the neighborhood. An improperly latched gate is all he needs to explore. Chukchi is a sweet heart and loves attention. When he sees me coming he gets sooo excited, jumps high in the air and gives Chucky yips. This guy is a great high energy companion. Trails, car rides, snuggling, and playing are is ideas of fun.
He is calming down at feeding time and seems to be feeling more secure in this environment. All he needs is love and attention (don’t we all?) and he will be a great pet. As a dog and cat friendly husky you can not get a better deal than this.
Check back soon or SEND AN EMAIL to request more information and/or an adoption application.
This dog's adoption donation is $225.
