Chocolate Chip ("Chip" for short)'s Story

This dog is being fostered in Dallas TX and must be adopted within the Dallas or North Texas area.

NAME: Chocolate Chip (“Chip” for short)
GENDER: Male (Neutered)
AGE: About 8 years
WEIGHT: About 4.8 pounds
DOGS/CATS: Gets along with other small dogs, No with large dogs, Unknown with cats
CHILDREN: Should be fine with older, mature children (13 and older)

Sweet little Chocolate Chip (Or “Chip” for short)….Where do we start? We have given him this name based on his chocolate coloring and the fact that he is tiny and sweet – just like a Chocolate Chip!!

Chip was abandoned by his original family. They literally moved away and left him behind. Some Good Samaritans heard his story, picked him up and called CRT to see if we could bring him into our program. Our foster team said yes and he is now a beloved foster in our program.

Chip is extremely sweet and a little reserved at first. However, once he is comfortable in his environment, he is as playful as ever. Chip fits in well with the other Chihuahua in his foster family. He is starting to play with toys and especially loves the small crinkly ones.

Chip loves to explore and is very adventurous. He enjoys going out in the yard and exploring. It is important to note that Chip is small and therefore will always need his human nearby while he is outside (there are instances where hawks or large birds will swoop down and pick up small dogs under 5 pounds, so you will want to be there to protect Chip). Even in a fenced yard, it is imperative Chip NEVER be left alone outside. We also want to emphasize that your fence must be very secure. Chip is so tiny that he can easily slip under the smallest opening in a fence, so he will need to be in a home with a solid, wooden fenced yard. His home will need to be secure in all aspects, including protection around the front door.

Chip enjoys meeting new people. He is friendly and curious and wants to be friends with your friends. Chip loves his foster Mom. He enjoys being in the same room with her and will cuddle with her on the couch while they are watching TV. One of his favorite places is under a blanket. He loves to burrow under the blankets and take restful naps.

Our vet believes Chip is about 8 years old. Chip was only 3.8 pounds when we rescued him, but was a little thin. The great news is that we have had him on a healthy food and he now weighs 4.8 pounds. Our vet thinks this is an ideal weight for him and he looks great. He has a beautiful chocolate brown coat with tan highlights, and a tiny bit of white on his chest. His hair is a little longer than a typical smooth coated chihuahua, but not as long as a long-haired chihuahua. He is super cute.

In addition to his standard vet work, CRT completed a dental on Chip so he now has excellent teeth as he moves into his forever home. Chip has the the beginning of a very slight heart murmur which is not unusual for a Chihuahua of his age. It is not advanced enough for medicine (and he might never advance to that stage). The vet isn’t concerned right now — it just means we’ll want to keep an eye on it with regular checkups. Chip also has some early signs that his kidneys aren’t working at 100%, but it’s at a very mild stage and being well managed. Many dogs live long, happy lives with early kidney changes, especially with a good diet and regular checkups. Chip feels great, but we need his new family to know that he will need monitoring in these areas as he moves forward.

Chip has done well with his potty training. We are teaching him to potty outside and he will use potty pads inside as a backup plan. At night, he sleeps safely in a dog bed in his crate. We have not begun to train him to walk on a harness and leash yet.

Chip’s ideal home will be one with experience with smaller dogs such as Chip. Because of his very small size, he needs a safe home environment. Chip enjoys a laid back, low to moderate energy home as he is active but also enjoys chilling out. We think he would do well with other small dogs or also be a good only dog too as long as his family was around to interact with him. He is fairly quiet and would do well with a work at home family (he would enjoy time with you in your home office). Due to his small size, we do not recommend a home with larger dogs. We were told by the family who originally helped him that he was afraid of their larger dog. There are no children in his foster home, but we think he will do well in a home with older, mature children (13 and older).

Chip is being fostered in the DFW (Texas) area. If this sweet guy sounds like the right fit for your home, our CRT adoption form can be found at: http://www.chihuahua-rescue.com/adoption-application/

Chip will be neutered, micro chipped, up-to-date on shots, HW negative and on heartworm prevention. He is ready to join a loving family – could that family be yours?

This dog is a CRT rescue. Reference checks, adoption contract and $300.00 adoption donation required. (If you would like to donate more or do a birthday fundraiser for CRT to help offset his dental cost, that would be a blessing!)

As part of our mission to reduce the number of unwanted and sick dogs, we require that all current pets are spayed or neutered, current on vaccinations and taking heart worm prevention. Applications will not be considered if one or more of these requirements are not met.

After filling out an adoption application (found at http://www.chihuahua-rescue.com/adoption-application/), please email DFWCoordinator@chihuahua-rescue.com if you are interested in this dog. Please be sure to read about our adoption process and then fill out an adoption application before emailing the contact person.
