Chico 's Story

Meet Chico!

Chico is a tiny, year and a half old Chihuahua mix weighing just 6–7 pounds, but his heart for other animals is huge. This little guy came to us from the south and likely didn’t experience much human companionship early in life. Because of that, Chico is still learning what it means to feel safe with people—but make no mistake, he is an incredibly sweet soul.

Chico loves other dogs. Truly loves them. He thrives in a pack and gains confidence by following their lead. His current best friend is an 80-pound pit bull mix who he happily curls up on for warmth and comfort. Chico plays, cuddles, and learns from his dog friends, so a home with one (or more!) friendly dogs is an absolute must for him. He is also perfectly fine with cats.

People are still a little scary for Chico. He is very shy and unsure about human touch, especially being picked up or approached while standing. He does best with calm, patient adults who are willing to let him move at his own pace. When you’re on his level—sitting or lying on the couch—he’ll often come closer, play gently with your fingers, or offer his “bum” for pets. Face touches are still a work in progress, and that’s okay. Chico is not usually nippy or aggressive at all—just timid and learning.

Chico would do best in a quiet, adult-only home with a secure fenced yard, as leash skills are still very much a slow-and-steady learning process. He is fully house-trained and does not have accidents in the home. He happily goes outside with the other dogs, does his business, and comes running right back in. He doesn’t enjoy being crated but does wonderfully left loose in the house—lounging on the couch with the dogs, relaxing, and never getting into trouble.

He doesn’t like being alone and prefers to be near his dog friends or at least able to see his people. While he’s still building trust, he finds comfort in knowing you’re nearby.

Chico is neutered, up to date on vaccines, and will come with a health certificate prior to adoption.

With time, patience, and a calm, dog-savvy home, Chico is going to blossom into an incredible companion. He’s adorable, gentle, and quietly full of personality—just waiting for the right family to show him that love is safe and forever.

https://www.livefreerescue.com/adoption-application
