Chewy's Story

Meet Chewy!

If you're looking for a loyal best friend with a heart as big as his head, Chewy is your guy! This handsome Yellow Lab has a heart as big as his love for squeaky Chuckit balls. Toss a ball, and you've made his day-he could happily play fetch for hours!

Chewy is aptly named because he makes the most adorable noises, groans and howls similar to the Star Wars character, Chewbacca. As a passenger in the car, he will "trill" from the back seat, while chewing on a Benebone he will make the happiest noises, and he will "talk" to you when he wants let you know it is time to go outside or he simply needs some attention.

Chewy came to us from the San Jose Animal Care Center where he had been turned in as a stray and no one claimed him. Estimated to be around seven years old, it was evident he did not have the easiest last few years - he was severely underweight and his skin was in terrible condition due to bacterial infections.

But, wow, how his life has changed in the few short weeks he has been with AFRP! In his foster home, he immediately learned the comfort of memory foam dog beds, how delicious nutritional food tasted, and how medication helped relieve itchy skin. After taking him to a vet dermatologist, we were happy to find out that his skin issues were due to untreated bacterial infections, and with proper medication, he is already on the road to recovery! His fur is looking shinier and healthier, and it is even growing back in places that our vet wasn't sure it would!

In his foster home, Chewy is crate trained and settles in nicely at night (and can also stay in his crate for several hours during the day, if needed), making him a great addition to a home with a routine. His foster mom has been working on his potty training and he has never had any accidents in the home - he even alerts her to when he needs to go potty!

Chewy has already put on some weight since we first took him in and he is very food motivated, which makes him a quick learner, too. He eats his meals out of a slow feeder and enjoys mealtime so much that his tail wags while he eats. He will sit politely for treats and usually has a gentle mouth, but occasionally will get impatient - he's working on that! He is also very good about taking his medicine, which his foster puts in a piece of cheese or in peanut butter.

We don't believe Chewy had much interaction with other dogs in his previous life, so he is working on his dog socialization skills. In his foster home, he lives with three large male dogs and there have been no issues at all, but he doesn't seem to understand the concept of playing with the dogs in his foster home - he will watch them play and run alongside them, but rather than engage, he will bark at them. At this time, we think he would be a great roommate for another rather than a playmate. Chewy also still needs a little work on his dog-to-dog introductions when he is out of the foster home, and for that, he is enrolled in Obedience classes and is doing well.

When he's not playing with his favorite squeaky Chuckit ball, Chewy is happiest simply being with people. He's the kind of dog who loves to follow you from room to room, keeping you company whether you're cooking dinner, working from home, or relaxing on the couch. His sweet, affectionate personality makes him an easy dog to love. He goes to work with his foster mom and spends much of the work day sleeping at her feet under her desk.

With his gentle nature, loving personality, and resilient spirit, Chewy is ready to find a family who will cherish him as much as he'll cherish them. His perfect home is with a family of adult adopters or, due to his size, kids over 12. If you're looking for a devoted companion who's always up for a game of fetch and even more excited to be by your side, Chewy is ready to meet you!

Chewy is a foster-to-adopt candidate as he is currently on medication to clear up the bacterial infections for his skin that runs for just few more weeks and has a few more follow up vet appointments. We don't anticipate his skin condition being a long-term issue, though. If you are interested in fostering-to-adopt Chewy, AFRP covers the cost of his medication, vet visits and his food while you are fostering him!

Interested in fostering-to-adopt Chewy?
