Chelsea's Story
Chelsea is a darling gal who has had a rough go of things over the last few years and just wants the love and stability of a forever family to enjoy her retirement with.

Chelsea had a loving home for the first nine years of her life. Sadly, Chelsea’s guardian had to enter hospice care, so their family stepped in to care for Chelsea. The family had Chelsea for a year before surrendering her to a local open-admission shelter because of her anxiety issues. Having your mom around all the time and then losing that is tough and sweet Chelsea just doesn't understand what happened. She was then adopted for around a week before being returned because of her anxiety. Then after that she found herself adopted again as a companion for a truck driver. Unfortunately after being left alone in the truck her anxiety got the best of her and she caused some damage to the interior of the truck and once again found herself returned to the shelter.

Now that Chelsea has found her way to us she is on medication for her anxiety in order to help her remain calm even when alone. We are seeking a forever family for her with folks who are able to be at home more often then not, who are willing to work with her understandable nervousness, and find ways to keep her safe when they are not with her. Her new family would need to be understanding and patient with her, especially when she is first transitioning to her new life.

This sweet girl is around 10.5 years old as of 12/18/24. Now don't let that fool you she is still a happy, spirited, bouncy girl who we think has plenty of life left.

Chelsea came into our program with a limp in one of her back legs. Our vet instructed us to keep an eye on her but when we noticed her showing more signs of pain we took her in for x-rays. It was discovered that she has an old CCL rupture of the left knee AND a chronic CCL rupture of the right knee. She is currently on leash restriction, is on some medications to hopefully alleviate her pain, and we hope to begin swim therapy for her to help her become more comfortable overall with her knees.

Chelsea was also diagnosed with chronic allergy skin issues. We have started her on a medication called Zenrilia for the condition, which has begun to decrease her itchiness and make her much more comfortable.

Please don't let any of these things scare you. While Chelsea will need to be on Zenrilia for the rest of her life, she may not need anxiety meds long-term, depending on how she adapts to life with her new family. Also with the right lifestyle and support her knees should be able to be easily managed. We understand that taking on a dog with some hiccups is a big decision but with the amount of love Chelsea has to give it would be worth it for her new family.

As we said Chelsea has had a tough time but through it all she has remained a delightful ray of sunshine who charms everyone she meets. She has so much life and love left and is so excited to have a true forever with a family of her own.

If you would like to meet this special dog, please email dogs@lunashouse.org to get more information. Or you can complete an adoption application which is linked on the main adoptable dogs page on the website. Please be patient to hear from us as we are all volunteers and may not be able to respond immediately.

Our volunteers make sure just the right home is chosen so they require a home visit to make sure there are no safety issues. You must live within a 50 mile radius of our location in order to be considered.

The adoption fee is $250 and includes vaccines, flea prevention treatment, neuter/spay, and micro chipping. We get to know each dog as an individual and do our best to describe each dog based on personality and temperament, not breed label.
