Cheesecake's Story

You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website.Cheesecake has been with the rescue since September 2024. She came to us from Louisiana where she had been living in the woods near a small town. She was known to the residents who would often leave her food, but they were aware that she kept having puppies and unfortunately the puppies would very often get killed by other animals or run over by cars. She was hard to catch but after many unsuccessful attempts they finally captured her and one of her puppies (Pop-Tart). When Cheesecake arrived in Florida she was a very frightened dog. Her rehabilitation began with her first foster family where she learned she could live comfortably and even discovered a loving relationship with the man...and then began to trust his wife too. In November 2025, a little over a year later, we decided to move her to another foster to help her broaden her acceptance of people and being loved. She of course regressed a bit, but is re-adapting much more quickly than she did at first - just what we had hoped for! Cheesecake is still very timid and fearful of new things, new people and new places, but she is VERY gentle and sweet. She can be really affectionate and loves belly rubs and petting. Her energy level is quite low and she spends most of the time in her 'safe place', the bed (also in her first foster home). It took a while in both homes for her to learn she could go out on her own safely and come back in safely, but she is basically house broken and will hold it rather than pee in the house. So a few times a day she will take a brief stroll and sniff around in her fenced yard. At first, Cheesecake didn't interact with other dogs much, yet she has been quite accepting of them being near. Eventually she became somewhat companionable with them, but it took time. However, she does not yet understand play. It is important to know that Cheesecake is still a flight risk. If frightened she could easily get out of a harness or possibly even slip a Martingale collar, and if she got loose in an unfamiliar place she would be very difficult to catch. Cheesecake needs a securely fenced yard and someone who can be very attentive to her security. For so long this lovely girl was barely staying alive and so all she thinks about is safety and survival. We believe Cheesecake is on the road to learning to enjoy life, and our hope if she can find a family who will continue that beautiful journey with her. Cheesecake has been successfully treated for heartworm and has completed all of her vetting.
