Checkers's Story
Since coming in from a southern Illinois shelter, Checkers is adjusting well in his foster home. He loves wrestling with the other dogs and generally gets along well with them. He sleeps quietly in his crate at night though he would prefer the bed.

Checkers enjoys a car ride and leaps in his crate in the back of the SUV like a champ. He enjoys meeting lots of new people where is foster works at the animal hospital.

He has had a couple accidents in the house, so working on housebreaking is in progress. His foster has gotten strict about going out with him and praising him when he goes. She thinks he occasionally “forgets to go” when he’s outside with the pack having a good time so this is ensuring it’s the first order of business now.

He watches the cats from a distance and seems pretty calm about them, but all interactions have been through baby gates so far.

Checkers pulls on the leash but is learning to sit when asked and to watch you for information.

He is a smart, active dog who is still a bit of an adolescent when it comes to behavior. He is mouthy and will nip your calves in excitement. Checkers will be a great dog for someone who will spend time with him keeping his brain and body active. He isn’t a super driven dog, and he is happy to relax and hang out however, he is not a couch potato either!

Adopters must live within 75 miles of Racine, WI. Adoption fee is $300 plus a $100 deposit for mandatory training classes*. This radius is in place due to ongoing medical care we provide post-adoption.

All dogs are in foster care and are not located in our office. Since all of our dogs are held in private foster homes, we look to have an approved application prior to sending someone to a private residence. If you are interested in adoption, please complete an application. Online applications are located on our H.O.P.E website @ www.hopesafehouse.org.

Upon approval of your application, we will contact you with the foster home phone number to arrange a meet and greet. There is no cost or obligation to apply.

*Basic obedience training classes are required for all dogs at an approved certified training facility of your choice. H.O.P.E. pays $50.00 towards the overall cost of classes. You will be required to leave a $100.00 deposit for training at time of adoption. This deposit is 100% refundable after completing the basic obedience class.

All dogs will be up to date on age-appropriate vaccines, spay/neutered*, microchipped and a 30-day health certificate. *If they are too young to be altered, the fee includes spay/neutered at one of our preferred clinics All pets have a lifetime return policy.

Thank you for your interest.
