Charlotte's Story

Charlotte is a charming 4 year old true blue with lots of Weim personality! Her owner passed away and she was turned into a shelter, who then reached out to IWR to bring her into a foster home. She is mostly ok with other large dogs, but can get possessive over a toy / bone / treat (treat specifically if dropped on the floor). For this reason she will do best in a home as an only dog and for this same reason I wouldn't recommend taking her to a dog park.
She has a happy personality and always wants to know where her humans are / what they are doing. However, the happiness turns to stress when her humans need to leave the house. She needs a solid crate with lots of zip ties and carabiner hooks. She is tall and lanky and knows how to squeeze through small openings (gaps in fencing and doesn't have to get the crate door pushed out much to squeeze out). If left uncrated she will wreak some havoc - like pull curtains down trying to see out the window / might nervous poop in the house / chew up shoes or boots, etc. We'd like to hope someday she'll settle in enough to be left uncrated and not cause trouble. For now to help her deal somewhat with her overall stress of humans leaving (since, realistically, we have to leave sometimes) I keep her on Purina ProPlan Calming Care and Max and Neo CBD oil. I (her foster mom) work from home 2 days a week so I also keep Trazadone on hand to give her on the days I'm going to be gone in the office all day. She does occasionally pee in her crate if left for more than 7 hours, but that's understandable, and it's not every time. Due to her size and energy she could potentially make a great running partner! She is trained on a nose lead (not saying she never paws at it - there's still a little protest there but mostly good) and also walks nicely. She listens to her handler very well but does have high prey drive (has even been known to drop a live possum when told to "LEAVE IT" - and, as stated prey is very high value to her so that says alot). Along with listening well the girl has an amazing recall! She is cautious but curious of new people at first so should always meet new people on leash with treats and positive praise. She rides in the car really great!

Though she's otherwise healthy, she does need to be on Proin, a prescription pill for incontinence, which costs about $40 a month. Ideally we'd like to find her a home where someone works at least part time from home like her current situation, or a family who has different schedules so at least 1 person is home most times, or maybe a retired person or couple who is home alot looking for a great companion. She is fostered in Des Moines IA area and her adoption fee is $250.

Please fill out an adoption application at our website: www.iowaweimrescue.org. We are not a shelter, but a rescue that operates out of foster homes and with volunteers only. Once your application is received, a volunteer will make contact with you to start our adoption approval process.
