Charlie

Charlie is another one of the dogs who came to us from the heartbreaking neglect situation involving multiple dogs being kept outside in cages. They had little to no food, were covered in fleas and ticks, and were drinking from mud puddles. A game warden discovered the dogs and reached out to us for help.<br/><br/>You can still see some of Charlie’s past when you look at him. His poor ears are scarred and have areas of hair loss from being repeatedly bitten by flies. Those scars are a reminder of the conditions he lived in, but they certainly haven't changed his feelings about people. Charlie loves every person he meets! He is friendly, affectionate, and very happy to receive the attention he missed out on for so long.<br/><br/>Of all the dogs from this group, Charlie is currently having the most difficulty learning to be comfortable around other dogs. Considering his past, we can't really blame him. These dogs had to compete for limited food and resources, and many of the males were intact and living in close quarters. Charlie learned that other dogs could be competition and that he needed to protect himself.<br/><br/>We are working with him and giving him time to learn that his life is different now. His food isn't going to disappear, he doesn't have to compete for what he needs, and he has people looking out for him. For now, Charlie would likely be happiest as the only dog in his new home or with an experienced adopter willing to take introductions very slowly. We don't want to rush him—we want to give him the opportunity to feel safe and succeed.<br/><br/>Unfortunately, Charlie is also heartworm positive and is currently undergoing treatment. Heartworm treatment is a process that takes approximately 3–4 months to complete, but Charlie doesn't have to wait that long to find his family. If he is adopted before his treatment is finished, his adopter will need to bring him back to us for his remaining scheduled treatments.<br/><br/>Charlie currently weighs 40.6 pounds, making him a nice medium-sized dog. We aren't exactly sure what breed he and the rest of the group are, but because of their history of originally coming from North Carolina, our best guess is that they may be Mountain Cur mixes.<br/><br/>Charlie may have scars from his old life, but they don't define him. When it comes to people, this boy has so much love to give. He survived a life where he had to look out for himself. Now he deserves a home where someone will look out for him.
