Charles Darwin 's Story
Charles is a 12 year old toy Poodle with a lot of personality! Let's call him "special needs."

Charles came to us a completely unrecognizable, matted mess. What happened in his life to make him this way... I dont know. But I know it wasnt pretty. Im glad he's here with us now, but I'm so worried its going to take him a significant amount of time to find a home given his needs.

Charles is not a dog who wants to be handled much. Forget cuddling on the couch, he is never going to be a lap dog. But he deserves love and support regardless. He is slowly learning trust from humans and has recently started allowing brief head pets and hand licks. He needs an adopter who can respect his boundaries and doesn’t take his quirks personally. He will also need a groomer willing to work with him. He might not love being a social dog, but what he does love is routine and being near his people. He follows his foster around constantly.

Even being a senior dog, he is rather active. He gets his miles in daily with all his pacing and wandering. He sleeps best in a playpen otherwise he’ll pace all night. For house training, he can cue to go outside and does well if those cues are noticed. If he had better vision, he’d likely be fully self-sufficient with a dog door but he doesn't, so we just deal with it.

Charles does fine with other dogs and doesn’t bother small animals like rabbits either. He should go to a home with no small kids. His size, age, disabilities, and dislike of handling makes an adult-only home the right fit. He does have some vision and hearing impairments. Because of this, he should stay off furniture since he will absolutely walk right off without a second thought. He also had significant dental issues in the past, and he only one tooth left, so he eats soft food and takes gabapentin every day as a recommendation from the vet.

Charles might be quirky and set in his ways, but it's genuinely endearing. He snores loudly, uses his nose like a pro when food is involved, and prances around happily for being such an angry fellow at times. If you’re patient, observant, and appreciate a senior dog who doesn’t need constant attention and coddling to feel secure, Charles could really use a home of his own. We've done all the hard work getting him healthy and ready for adoption - now we're just waiting on you to apply!

Located in Slidell, Louisiana
