About our House Hippo Chala:

Chala entered SPR's foster care program in January 2021 from the Cayman Islands. Chala sadly hasn't had an easy go pretty much for her whole life. Since rescued in Cayman she spent 4 full years in a small shelter room and never got to experience puppy hood. When she arrived to Canada she had moved to a couple of foster homes and board and train facilities as she has been in our care now for over 400 days(over a year). Since her transition to a new foster home in January she is driving in a loving environment where she can finally be a part of a family who provides her with the love and structure she needs to thrive! She is an adorable, 5-year-old pup and an excellent blend of a couch potato and playful puppy. She loves napping, walking, chew toys, and her people!


Personality:

Chala is really is a sweet and loving pup. She is extremely friendly with everyone she meets and will greet you with a very wet and slippery kiss (she is the star of the show in the condo elevator!)! She truly wants nothing more than to be everybody’s best friend. Within this new home environment, Chala is learning a new set of boundaries and structure. She loves to play. She is very good at the game tug and loves to chew. Bully sticks, stuffed kongs, and her squeaky toys are some of her favourite things along with cuddle and nap near her fav humans!

Training:

Chala is fully crate trained, house trained, and walks well on a leash, but her new family must be committed to setting boundaries and structure to allow her to continue thriving in a home. She knows how to sit, down, paw and what no means. Chala has had a rough go at life and deserves someone who’s going to give her the time to realize her full potential. Despite all she has been through, she has SO much love to give and is such a happy girl.


Activity:

Chala needs to be given a fair amount of exercise which includes play. She is currently going on 2 walks per day along with incorporating play into her daily life where she can get out her energy. She does have an old injury to her knee and will most likely need medication for life covered by SPR's compassionate care program.

Chala's Perfect Home:

She would do best in a calm home without young children (over the age of 16), cats, or small dogs, as she is like a giant puppy herself and when over-excited (in a high state of arousal), either when playing or overstimulated. With this being said her fostering is working with our trainer and Chala has really learn what no means and her boundaries so her adopter will need to keep this up! She needs a home committed to working with her to keep her calm and utilize the training techniques she has been practicing, give her lots of love and snuggles and just advocate for her!

Her ideal home would be with someone with prior dog experience and someone committed to utilizing the training techniques used with Chala to continue to have her Thrive! Her perfect home would a person who can advocate for her and her needs she would make a perfect office dog as she is currently going into the office 2 times a week with her foster and loves getting all the attention for the humans! With clear communication and continued obedience training, she is would truly be an excellent addition to any family.
