Buster (Neutered)'s Story

Buster is a handsome 5-year old male Shepherd mix who was surrendered by his owner on August 4, 2024 because the family was moving and couldn't take Buster to the new residence.

This good-looking boy has a shiny black-and-brown coat with a small patch of white on his chest, a long tail, and a beautiful face with dark brown eyes, a brown mask, and extra-large floppy ears.

His family told us that Buster is good with other animals, and he also does well with children. Buster has been kept indoors and is housetrained.

These photos of Buster were taken shortly after his arrival on August 4th. Buster was obviously out of his 'comfort zone' being in an unfamiliar environment after being in his home for the past five years, so HSOV Kennel Tech Emily Beaver was spending extra time with Buster to help him realize that he was among new best friends who loved his already .. And Buster seemed to sense Emily was genuinely trying to console him. Within a few minutes, Buster was a bit more relaxed (and even rolled over for belly rubs by the time his photo session was deemed a success).

Buster couldn't bring himself to stand on those scary floor scales for a weigh-in, so we honored his wishes. He is estimated to weigh approximately 50 lbs.

Fortunately for Buster, a compassionate foster mother offered to give him a temporary home on August 4th so that he would not have to spend time in the shelter environment.

Buster will be neutered before being adopted by his new family. HSOV is currently accepting adoption/foster applications for Buster.

Buster went home with another foster family on September 2, 2024 who had planned to adopt him after he was neutered. However, the adopters changed their mind and returned Buster on September 7, 2024 .. So he is once again available for foster/adoption. His foster family provided this information about Buster during the time that he was in their home:

Buster has been heartworm tested. He was being given stress medications.

Buster knows some basic commands and will "sit" and "shake" when asked to do so.

Buster is afraid of thunder/lightning.

His known behavioral issues are that he tends to be dominant ('alpha' male) with other dogs and has been known to 'nip' (but we weren't told under the circumstances Buster nips), and that Buster is prone to digging.

Buster went home with a foster family on December 7, 2024 who plans to adopt him after he is neutered.

Sadly, Buster was returned to the HSOV on April 10, 2025 through no fault of his own since his foster family was no longer in a position to be able to keep him.

Update: Buster was neutered on September 24, 2025 and was also given rabies vaccine.
