Your dog cannot catch heartworms by playing, sharing water bowls, or living with another dog who is heartworm positive.

Heartworms are only transmitted through mosquito bites. Here's how it works:
A mosquito bites a dog that has heartworms and picks up microscopic baby worms (called microfilariae).
That same mosquito then bites another dog, transmitting the parasite.
Over time, those parasites mature into heartworms inside the dog's heart and lungs.

Because mosquitoes are required for transmission, direct contact between dogs poses zero risk. This also means heartworms are preventable with monthly preventatives that stop the worms from developing if a mosquito bite occurs.

Heartworm-positive dogs like Buddy can safely live with other dogs, go on walks, attend adoption events, and be loved just like any other pup. With proper treatment and care, many dogs go on to live long, happy lives.

Education helps save lives - and removes fear where it doesn't belong.
