Your dog cannot catch heartworms by playing, sharing water bowls, or living with another dog who is heartworm positive.<br/><br/>Heartworms are only transmitted through mosquito bites. Here's how it works:<br/> A mosquito bites a dog that has heartworms and picks up microscopic baby worms (called microfilariae).<br/> That same mosquito then bites another dog, transmitting the parasite.<br/> Over time, those parasites mature into heartworms inside the dog's heart and lungs.<br/><br/>Because mosquitoes are required for transmission, direct contact between dogs poses zero risk. This also means heartworms are preventable with monthly preventatives that stop the worms from developing if a mosquito bite occurs.<br/><br/>Heartworm-positive dogs like Buddy can safely live with other dogs, go on walks, attend adoption events, and be loved just like any other pup.
