Bruno's Story
Dog name: Bruno

Gender: Male, neutered

Age/weight: 1.5 years / 10 lbs

Breed: Chihuahua mix

Heartworm status: Negative

Medications/Injuries: Doxycycline for Anaplasmosis (one week left)

Good with people? Scared and unsure at first, but once he’s used to you, he’s a sweetheart

Children? Yes

Dogs? Yes

Cats? Unknown

Other animals? Unknown

House trained? He has been on crate/corral rest since his surgery, so I’m not sure. He will only go potty on a pee pad right now, so it likely won’t be difficult to train him once he can roam freely.

Crate trained? Yes — he does very well and it’s his safe space

Energy level: Low to medium

Travel well? He has been fine in the car while crated

Favorite toy/activity: He loves chew bones and cuddling with his humans

Leash trained? Not sure, as he hasn’t been on a leash in foster care due to recovery

Fence required? For now, yes

There is still a lot we don’t know about Bruno and what he is or isn’t capable of because since his rescue, he has been on strict crate/corral rest while recovering from surgery. He’s a very smart boy, so I’m confident that many of the unknowns will be no problem once he’s fully healed and comfortable.

Bruno has been through so much after being hit by a car. He’s understandably traumatized and very unsure with new people at first, but once he trusts you, he is the biggest sweetheart. He has done well in our home with a small and a medium-sized dog, has been introduced to a large dog and did well, and he’s also around our five-year-old son and does great with him.

His perfect home would be patient, understanding, and full of love — with people who respect his past and give him time. He is incredibly resilient; his surgeon even called his recovery a “miracle.” He gets excited for food, is extremely treat motivated, and loves to relax and lounge, so a slower-paced home would be ideal. He’s affectionate, loves to be loved, and enjoys simply being around his people, so a home that can give him lots of attention would be best.

It truly is a miracle that Bruno is still here. Had we not been where we were that day, his story may have ended very differently. We are beyond blessed to have been able to give him a second chance at life.
