Brownie's Story

The sweetest snacc!

Hey guys! I am Brownie and yes, I am as sweet! I am a 5 year old, Dachshund-Terrier mix and weigh at 66 lbs. I am a neutered boy. I was rescued from a kill shelter in LA and TAP pawmised me that I have a deserving family out there. I have congenital blindness and more communicative with voices and gentle touch. I also see my vet regularly once a year for Grade II-III/VI systolic murmur. If any problems arise, a recheck echocardiogram and blood pressure should be performed. I currently take Apoquel to manage my allergies (~$170.00 for one month supply. Price may vary depending on market value and where purchased). I have been a totally good boy at my foster home and bathroom and leash trained. I know cues like right, left, stairs/step and outside, and I even ring a bell for bathroom!

Being a blind dog could have been challenging but I am receptive to sounds and my loving foster home is helping set me up for success. I can be very particular about who I am friends with, but if you are one of the lucky ones, it will be the absolute best. I am a lil shadow that follows my mama round and get all cuddly when she's lounging and sitting. Affectionate pets, belly rubs are my love language. I have a calm temperament, but will try to jump up and give hugs when I greet. I do well alone in the house as a free roamer. I am crate trained, but feel much better outside when alone. IF I am not feeling friendly towards someone, I'd rather be left alone as I dont enjoy being coerced with bribes or treats. Because I'm blind, sometimes when I'm trying to sense someone's proximity, I get very still and stare out into space. I'm not trying to be rude, I pawmise! If you are my chosen one, I will never try to harm you, but if I am not liking someone, we'd rather not sit together. I love my soft and squaky toys and carry them around like my babies, toss them and fetch them myself. I dont like to share them with other pets and humans. I also prefer being alone while I eat.

Being blind doesnt stop me from my fun! I enjoy walks, playing with toys(and digging and burying them), and tug-o-war is becoming my quick fav with my foster dog sibling! Also, with calm and slow intros on walks outside, I love meeting new dogs and I can be dog-friendly. But no cats please, and I haven't had kiddo experience yet.

A loving and patient home with young adults would be perfect, and females are better, but I am learning to trust! Physical touch is my love language and I am a big time cuddler! I am a very affectionate and loyal friend to have. My adaptability will truly blow your mind and you may forget that I'm sightless. I may be very selective, but when I find my person, we are all set! I will do best with a very patient family, without kids or cats. A calm dog will be okay with slow introductions. We could enjoy a moderate amount of activity and short walks. I can be alone at home by myself, but would prefer company rather than loneliness.

The Animal Pad recognizes that adopting a dog with special needs can be challenging. Brownie's adoption package includes TWO FREE sessions with our partner trainer Deb Bauer from Your Inner Dog (https://www.yourinnerdog.com/) to help him acclimate to his new environment. Deb is a world-renowned expert with blind and/or deaf dogs. She teaches people how to communicate effectively with their visually and/or hearing-impaired dogs to teach them effective life skills, new tricks, and to ensure a happy and wonderful quality of life. She can work with you no matter where in the world you are, and has worked with Karl during his time at The Animal Pad. She is committed to setting everyone up for success during this new life change!

If you think you can be the yummy crust to my gooey brownie, let's meet up! My adoption fee is $200 and that includes spaying/neutering, shots, and microchip. If you want to take me home, please fill out the form on the website here: https://theanimalpad.org/adoption-application/

The Animal Pad's Adoption Policy
We prioritize local San Diego applicants. We do not provide transport of dogs to other states, and don't allow the dogs to fly in the cargo of the plane. Our adoption process from start to finish, involves 3 standard forms, and 2 situational. All potential applicants must be capable of providing their adopted pet with routine and emergency veterinary care (yearly health checks, keeping vaccinations current, heartworm/flea preventatives, and immediate care in the event the animal is sick or injured). They are required to license their pet, and keep an identification tag on their pet at all times. All applicants must agree to a home check, and provide us with a veterinary reference, or personal references if you're a first-time pet owner. Our home checks are not to invade the privacy of the applicants, we do this to ensure the pet is going into a safe home. We do not discriminate against non-homeowners, or those living in apartments, condos, or otherwise. Our adoption fees vary from $150-1000. Applicants must agree in writing that if for any reason they are unable to keep or care for their pet, the pet will be surrendered back to our rescue and not re-homed, turned over to a shelter, pound, rescue, new owner, sold, etc. Adoption Application: https://theanimalpad.org/adoption-application/
