Boyd

Boyd is one of the dogs who came to us from a heartbreaking neglect situation. He and several other dogs were being kept outside in cages with no food, covered in fleas and ticks, and drinking from mud puddles. A game warden discovered the dogs and reached out to us for help. Boyd is actually the dad to several of the other dogs who came in with him.<br/><br/>Despite everything he has been through, Boyd is a mellow, easygoing guy. He walks nicely on a leash and already knows how to sit. He enjoys attention and is slowly learning what it means to be cared for and have his needs met every single day.<br/><br/>We are continuing to work with Boyd around other dogs. Many of the males from this group arrived intact, and because they had been forced to compete for limited food and resources, they learned to be defensive around one another. Now that Boyd has been neutered, has plenty of food, and is living in a safe environment, we are hopeful that with time and positive experiences he will become more comfortable around other dogs. For now, introductions to other dogs should be done slowly and carefully.<br/><br/>Boyd occasionally has an accident in his kennel, but he is improving all the time. After living in conditions where he had no choice but to live in his own waste, he is learning that his new space can stay clean and that he will regularly be let outside.<br/><br/>Unfortunately, Boyd is also one of the dogs from this group who tested positive for heartworms. He has started treatment and is doing well, but heartworm treatment is a process that takes approximately 3–4 months. Boyd does not have to wait until treatment is finished to find his family! If he is adopted before completing treatment, his adopter will need to bring him back to us for his remaining scheduled treatments.<br/><br/>Since arriving, Boyd has been neutered, brought current on his vaccinations, treated for parasites, and is gaining weight nicely. It has been wonderful watching him become healthier and more comfortable.<br/><br/>We don't know exactly what breed Boyd is. Because this group originally came from North Carolina, we believe they may be Mountain Cur mixes, but that's our best guess.<br/><br/>Boyd has spent enough of his life simply trying to survive. Now he is learning that his bowl will always be filled, his space will be clean, and people can be kind. What he needs next is a patient family willing to show him what it feels like to truly be home.
