Bonita's Story
Meet Bonita!

***Foster Family Update!!***

Bonita es muy bonita! This beautiful girl has come a long way from when she arrived in our foster home from SDH, blossoming from a scared shelter pup to an affable sweetheart who is growing more and more confident every day. Since we started fostering her, Bonita assimilated quickly into our family of six (2 adults, 2 dogs & 2 kids). She enjoys meal time, snuggling, feeling safe, off leash hikes, chewing on dog toys / dog bones, and playing with other dogs in the house. She really is the perfect size: a balance of mobility and athleticism.

Bonita has progressed nicely with her on leash walks but still struggles a bit with anxiety in the car. That said, we have seen a nice improvement with the car rides as the repetition has helped desensitize her to the point where she usually just lays down now when we go anywhere. She has had a couple of tussles over human affection with our 15lb alpha dog but in each instance, they quickly worked it out with a little intervention.

Bonita will flourish in her furever home and would benefit from some continued exposure to public environments to help boost her confidence. We are on the brink of a foster fail as she really is such a sweetie but know that we can continue to provide value by fostering more dogs for SDH.

This adorable young mixed-breed pup is one of 32 lucky dogs who just arrived in Oregon from our incredible rescue partners across Mexico-including Cancun, Mexico City, and San Felipe in Baja California Sur. This pup's journey covered lots and lots of miles, all leading her here to the Pacific Northwest where these pups can now begin settling into temporary foster care and getting the chance to rest, decompress, show off her sweet personality, as well as to start learning some new things!

This pup and their fellow travelers are now ready to meet their forever families! If you've been waiting for your chance to welcome a rescue pup into your home, don't miss out. Submit an online adoption application through our website to learn more, arrange a meet-and-greet, and take advantage of our flexible 3-7 day in-home trial to make sure it's the perfect match.

Will you be this pup's lucky new hero?

steps to adopting

(OUR ADOPTABLE DOGS ARE IN SEPARATE TEMPORARY FOSTER HOMES BETWEEN BEND/CENTRAL OREGON AND THE GREATER PORTLAND AREA. THEREFORE, MEET AND GREETS ARE NOT DONE AT OUR FACILITY. TO LEARN MORE, PLEASE SUBMIT YOUR ADOPTION APPLICATION ONLINE AND OUR ADOPTION PROGRAM MANAGER WILL REACH OUT TO YOU WITH FURTHER INSTRUCTIONS ON HOW TO MEET YOUR NEW PUP!)

The first step to adopting a dog from SDH is to complete the adoption application. First click on the "OUR DOGS tab up above, and then click on the orange colored "Fill out an Adoption Application here" button to start the process). Once submitted, please expect 3-5 business days or sooner for processing and to hear back from us. Once you are pre-approved, your adoption application will remain on file with us for 1 year and it can go towards multiple adoptions within that 1 year time frame before it expires.

To finalize an adoption you must sign the adoption contract and pay the full adoption fee. The adoption fee helps cover our costs. On average, per dog, it costs SDH between $500-$700 for vetting/medical/sterilization, transport and other rescue related expenses. All dogs are rescued and do not transport to SDH until they are healthy and ready to be adopted. All dogs are examined by a veterinarian before they fly, which includes sterilization whenever possible, given standard vaccines and rabies (if age appropriate). Most dogs are sterilized before they come into our program, however if this is not the case we will spay/neuter them once they arrive at our cost.

Upon their arrival, all dogs are seen for a wellness exam by SDH's medical team. Once the adoption is finalized, any further medical care or treatment will not be covered by SDH, unless discussed prior with our medical team. All known issues are disclosed to the best of our ability prior to finalizing the adoption.
