She took shelter under the porch of an abandoned home, living in full survival mode — running fast and far anytime she saw a person. During that time, she gave birth to puppies under that porch. A rescue was able to secure her babies, but Strudel herself remained on her own for months.<br/><br/>On a freezing night in December, we were asked to help. After a few days of learning her routine, we finally had her safe and off the streets.<br/><br/>We didn’t know what to expect.<br/>Would she stay fearful?<br/>Would she become defensive now that she’d lost her “flight” option?<br/>Was she too far gone?<br/><br/>Our fears couldn’t have been more wrong...<br/><br/>The moment she realized she was safe, Strudel turned into a full-blown couch hippo. She adores cuddles, people, attention, and has absolutely no concept of personal space. She is crate trained, 100% potty trained, and has never had a single accident in foster. On her very first day, we asked her to sit — and she knew exactly what it meant. She was clearly someone’s beloved pet once.<br/><br/>She loves toys, treats, stealing hearts, and being told she’s cute (which she is, constantly).<br/><br/>Strudel is heartworm positive (we are paying for treatment and she is NOT contagious to other dogs) and has an old injury to her back leg — our vets believe she was likely hit by a car while surviving on her own, and it healed without treatment.
