BLUEBERRY's Story

MEET BLUEBERRY!

Small, sweet, and (sort of) blue like the real thing, meet Blueberry! Around 12 years old, Blueberry was adopted from a shelter in 2013 and spent most of her years in a loving home. After her family fell on hard times, she was rehomed but sadly later abandoned and left living outdoors. She was eventually surrendered to animal control and is now safe with City of Elderly Love so that we can ensure Blueberry finally finds her happily ever after!

Despite going through so much transition which is hard on anyone let alone a senior dog, she remains a sweet, social girl who loves meeting her people. She is currently in foster care where she is living with other dogs, a cat, and children. Besides needing to be fed separately from the other dogs due to a bit of food guarding (only towards dogs), she gets along with everyone so well! She can be a bit pushy when first interacting with other dogs but settles in well and is happy to share her space with them. Even at her age, Blueberry LOVES to play and will never turn down a game of tug-o-war or the chance to destroy a stuffed toy. She’ll happily occupy herself with a toy when she’s not snoozing on the couch, but loves it even more when you play with her! She can be a little mouthy while roughhousing but remains gentle with it.

Blueberry has a few manageable behavior quirks that are much improved now that she’s had time to decompress. She has a sensitive stomach and may occasionally have stress-related accidents, especially when her foster family leaves the house. We believe this is tied to her past instability and should continue to improve as she feels more secure. While she mostly naps when left alone, she does best crated, which helps her feel safe and prevents accidents.

Blueberry is a vocal girl who uses her voice to ask for attention or invite you to play. She’s made progress with not barking for food, though this is still a work in progress. She’s also a talkative player and will bark while play-bowing you or nudging toys toward you, which can seem intimidating at first if you don’t understand her cues.

Blueberry may also bark when she’s overstimulated, such as during departures or when kids are roughhousing. She responds well to redirection and is usually happy to refocus her energy on a toy or chew. To us, she seems like a dog who wasn’t taught clear boundaries, so she may hop onto the couch or bed without hesitation or beg for food during mealtimes. Blueberry may grumble or nip at you when asked to move while sleeping but she does eventually listen and responds.

While Blueberry has some awkward mannerisms which we think just add to her charm, she is living in foster care with small children (6 and 9) who she has always been affectionate, appropriate and gentle with. In fact, she usually tries to be in the same room as them because she adores them. Once you understand her quirks and embrace her adorably awkward personality, Blueberry is an incredibly easy, hilarious girl.

Blueberry has the expected lumps and bumps for a 12 year old dog which were found to be benign lipomas (fatty deposits). She was previously spayed and is now up to date on all vaccinations! Blueberry is an absolute angel at the vet and distracts all the vet techs when they see her come in! She stands patiently for her vet exams and happily takes treats and pets when offered.

Blueberry is available for adoption through City of Elderly Love. She is spayed, vaccinated and microchipped. Interested in adopting her? Visit cityofelderlylove.org to complete an online adoption questionnaire!
