Blake's Story

Hi, I’m Blake — pronounced "bah-LAH-kay," just like the comedy skit Kerry finds so funny.

My story begins on January 13, when my owner stopped by the shelter—not to give me up, but to ask for help. He spoke with the receptionist about the medical issues I was dealing with and shared that I had already been to the veterinarian twice: once for vaccines, and again for a severe skin condition.

At the time, I was in rough shape. My skin was inflamed and oozing, I had painful secondary infections, and I had lost all of my hair. My owner kept repeating that he didn’t want to surrender me—he just wanted advice. The recommendation was to seek a second veterinary opinion.

Two days later, on January 15, shelter staff arrived in the morning to find a puppy abandoned outside the building. That puppy was me.

I was suffering from severe demodectic mange and serious infections, and I clearly needed immediate care. As staff began talking, they realized I matched the description of the dog from that recent conversation. Thanks to detailed office notes, they were able to contact the veterinary clinic my owner had mentioned and confirm my history.

Treatment started right away—and the good news? I responded incredibly well. Within just three days, my body began healing, and I was already on the road to recovery.

I’m a fighter. I’m resilient. And despite everything I’ve been through, I’m still a happy, sweet pup who just needed medical help and a chance to heal. Now that I’m getting that chance, I’m ready to focus on what comes next: a future filled with care, consistency, and love.

If you believe in second chances and cheering for the underdog, I’d really love to meet you. ????

Due to Arkansas State's Spay Neuter Law, we do not perform same day adoption; unless the animal in particular has already been altered; rather an application to adopt must be filled out and then left at the front desk or by website, www.westmemphisanimalshelter.com Once a completed application has been received and an animal has been chosen, the application is reviewed by the adoption advisor and the process could take 24-48 hrs before you are contacted, please be patient. Veterinary references are most helpful if you currently have a pet in the home or have owned one in the past, sterilization of animals already in the home are mandatory, a fence/property check must be completed , if renting, landlord will be notified so we will need a contact number to verify applicant indeed can adopt said animal. All animals adopted from the West Memphis Animal Shelter must be sterilized according to Arkansas State Law.
