Birdie's Story

Meet Birdie

Birdie is an 8-year-old Cocker Spaniel and former puppy mill mama who is learning what it means to finally be a cherished companion. When Birdie first arrived in foster care, she was completely shut down. She would cower when someone reached for her, and for the first three days, she barely slept. She spent her time standing in her crate, unsure how to relax or trust the people around her.

But Birdie is discovering that life can be pretty wonderful.

With each passing week, Birdie has become more comfortable with her routine and her foster family. She has even started playing with stuffed toys — something that seemed unimaginable when she first arrived. Most of all, she has discovered that people are pretty great, and now that she knows what attention and affection are, she wants ALL of it! Birdie loves being held, petted, and cuddled and will happily let you know when she thinks she's being neglected. She can be a little whiny when she's asking for attention, but it's hard to blame her after all she's been through.

Birdie also really loves food — especially treats! Food is definitely one of the ways to win her heart.

She enjoys the company of other dogs and loves sleeping next to her foster siblings. She can be a little bossy with dogs her own size or smaller, so she would do best with respectful canine companions who won't mind her occasional opinions.

Birdie is crate trained and is doing well with housebreaking. She is still learning some of the basics of being a pet, including walking on a leash and becoming comfortable with the sights and sounds of a neighborhood. These things will take time and patience as she continues to experience all the new things that come with her new life.

Birdie would do best in a home with older, dog-savvy children who understand that she needs patience and time to adjust. She cannot live with cats, as she does enjoy chasing them.

And one more important detail: Birdie looks absolutely adorable in dog sweaters. She seems to enjoy wearing them, too!

Birdie will soon be having her dental cleaning and extractions as needed, along with her spay, so she'll be well on her way to starting this next chapter of her life.

Birdie has beautiful eyes, a gentle heart, and so much more personality emerging every day. She has spent most of her life having very little choice or attention, and now she's discovering the joy of being someone's beloved dog.

She is a sweet girl who is learning to trust, learning to play, and learning that she deserves to be loved. Birdie is ready for someone who will give her the patience and kindness she needs while she continues to blossom.
