Billy's Story

***PERK FOR POTENTIAL ADOPTERS IN SAN DIEGO AREA: Since Billy has been through a 4 week board and train with North County Canine Training, he is eligible for FREE group training sessions and pack walks FOR THE DURATION OF HIS LIFE!!***

Meet sweet boy Billy!

Billy is a world class snuggle bug, a belly rub a?cionado and expert-level chair stealer. He’s also a bundle of energy who likes long walks, running lightning-fast laps in the back yard and playing with squeaky toys. Billy craves a?ection and will roll over for chest and belly rubs any chance he gets.

Billy has made guest appearances on many zooms, always to a chorus of
compliments about how cute he is.

Billy spent two months at board and train, learning basic commands like sit, down, place and growing more comfortable being in a crate. He was a favorite of the trainers who loved his cuddles, playfulness, infectious enthusiasm and desire to learn.

More about Billy here, in his own words…

Billy, what’s your favorite thing in the world?
B: People! People who give me love, belly rubs, tell me I’m a good boy. I love to always be near my person, laying on them or snuggled up next to them. I like to always have at least one paw touching!

How are you with po<y training?
B: Expert level, not a single accident at my foster house.

On a scale of 1-10, what would you say is your walking skill level?
B: Well, I don’t know how to count but my person calls me a C-student, if that makes sense? I’m super helpful in pulling my person along to make sure they get their steps in every day.

What comment do you hear most often when you’re out for a walk?
B: I love his ears!

How are you with kids?
B: There are no kids in my foster home, but I met two toddlers and knew instantly to lay on my belly and let them come to me to give pets and hugs. They got a little rowdy and I wanted to go run around with them but I wasn’t allowed to. Those are the only kids I’ve interacted with.

How are you with other dogs?
B: A work in progress. Sometime I’m reactive on walks and sometimes I hide behind my person. The trainer thinks I get overly-excited and my person thinks there are times I get anxious. It’s going to take ongoing work for me to learn how to manage interactions on walks.

What are your thoughts on personal space?
B: What’s that?

What’s your point of view on privacy?
B: What’s that?

How do you feel about being left alone?
B: I do not like it. I’m currently working on my separation anxiety, but it’s hard and takes a lot of practice.

What are your feelings about the crate?
B: It’s not my favorite but thanks to consistent training, I’ll now enter when asked, assuming there’s cheese involved.

Where do you prefer to sit?
B: The couch or any kind of chair. I particularly like the La-Z-Boy chair and crawling behind someone to push them o? so I can take my rightful place.

Where do you prefer to sleep?
B: Near my person! I know the bed is o?-limits but I want to sleep right next to it! I prefer not to sleep in a crate.

Tell us your thoughts on car rides.
B: I love getting in the car, I will always head to the car when I go outside even if we are supposed to go on a walk. I’d really like to be in the front seat with my person but I’m learning to be comfortable by myself in the back, where I can ride with my head out the window (while safely buckled in and driving only on streets, of course). I get agitated when on the freeway.

If you were an Olympian, what would be your sport?
B: Ooh tough one. I’m as fast at the Flash when I run laps in the backyard but I also can clear ?ve-foot fences, so either sprinter or high-jumper.

What do you tend to eat?
B: We’ve discovered I seem to have a poultry allergy, so no chicken for me! I’ve been eating Purina Pro Plan salmon for sensitive skin and tummies. We’re careful to avoid treats with poultry or poultry by-products.

What is your favorite treat?
CHEESE.

How do you feel about baths and grooming?
B: My good friend Max has come a couple times in his mobile grooming van and I’m so happy to see him that I jump into the van. He says I’m an absolute love and easy to handle.

What’s your energy level?
B: It’s pretty high! I take naps but then need to get out on a walk or drive or hike. I have big energy bursts with zoomies and sometimes I get mouthy even though I know I’m not supposed to. And then I want lots of cuddles.

What are your greatest strengths?
B: I make sure people feel loved and needed. After a long workday, I help them decompress with cuddles, laughs or getting outside for some exercise.

What would you say are your biggest areas for improvement?
B: Being okay with being alone and neutralizing my reactivity.

What do you think would be a successful home environment for you?
B: One ?lled with love, affection, patience, consistency, and a commitment to me for the rest of my life. A home with more than one adult for me to focus on, where I’m not alone very much and it’s okay that I’m a Velcro dog. A yard where I can sprint around to burn o? energy and a location where long walks are easy to take.
Any introductions to other animals or kids would need to be done slowly and intentionally, as we don’t yet know how that might go. We’re working on ?nding
opportunities for exposure so we can gather more information.
