Bernadette's Story
Bernadette has neurological special needs that are manageable now but cannot be further managed if symptoms worsen. Pain and comfort measures are the goal.
Special details below - please read the full profile before inquiring.*

Hey there! I’m Bernie! Well to be 100% correct my name is Bernadette, but my foster momma calls me Bernie! My life started out just a bit crazy and it still is. We’ll get to that in a minute. You see my fur mom was hit by a car! Me and my 2 siblings were born a little early and our mom wasn’t able to care for us. SOCA scooped us up when we were only 24 hours old and a really nice lady kept us warm and tube and bottle fed us until we could eat big pup food.

I am a very sweet little girl. If you didn’t know, bottle babies really bond to people, as you could imagine, right? I absolutely love to hang on my foster momma’s chest. Occasionally I give a few little nibbles and licks on her face. I love, love, love my toys! - I have a lot of fun moving them around, telling them what’s what, and maybe even giving them a little growl - Rawr!

I was the runt of the little litter - and when I say little I mean it! I am only 4 pounds now! I probably will not weigh more than 5 pounds when I am full grown. But I have to tell you something about me.... The humans are not completely sure why - was it because I wasn’t done cooking yet, was it because I was the runt of the litter, was it because some not great humans were trying to breed pocket puppies without realizing that breeding for super tiny toy dogs with apple heads & big eyes too often leads to health problems - they really can’t say. But I said there was more crazy to come and here it is.

You see, my brain is not formed right. I have fluid on several parts of my brain. Apparently I am too small for surgery & medication may cause more harm than good to me. What does this mean though??? Well, the pressure on my brain from that fluid and the (I think they called it) malformation of my head & neck creates some problems for me. I mean, I cope like we all do, right? But if you are thinking about taking me home, I guess you need to know these things. I get very dizzy and a little scared when someone picks me up or puts me down. We have a workaround for that! I also need to have carpet or rugs with some padding so that I am able to get around without falling. It would not be so good if I were to hit my head. I mean, I already have 99 problems!! I don’t like looking or turning to the left - that means I kind of circle around sometimes and I have to be very crafty about how I drink and eat so that I don’t fall into my bowl. That would sure be embarrassing . I may be having some little seizures. I don’t notice anything, but my foster momma has talked to some other humans about it I think. I am not in any pain, thank goodness! I can eat and go potty like a big girl too! That should let you know what I’m not lacking in the noggin department. I might actually have more than my share of noggin. There are special precautions to take for walking & wearing a harness, plus I really don’t need to be around kiddos or other dogs who do not understand my delicate nature. I can be a little moody, which I’ve heard is pretty normal with... uh... hydrooooo... cephalussss. Heck, you’d be cranky now and again if you had a bunch of pressure on your brain wouldn’t you??

I am fully aware that I have deficits and need a very special forever momma or daddy. But I do truly have a lot of love to give and my cuteness surely makes up for so much!?! If you think that you may be that right person, put in your application and my foster momma will give you a call and answer any questions you might have about me. Thanks so much for taking the time to get to know me a little bit.
My adoption fee is $350 locally in Houston, TX and it includes all my age-appropriate vaccines, spay/neuter and microchip.
