Bentley's Story
Beautiful 65-pound, 4 year old energetic pup who did not receive much obedience at his last home, but will thrive in an active, athletic, consistent home that even gives him a job to do. We just learned that he's a champion tennis ball fetch player. see video

A dedicated Santa Barbara Shelter volunteer took BENTLEY home for a couple of weekends to live with his big dogs to learn more about him. We are sharing in hopes of getting BENTLEY the best forever home.

BENTLEY took a while to calm down from his shelter level but it helped that I went about 3 miles on the scooter and burned off some of his energy. Then he played ball the rest of the day but I had him sit before each throw just to work on his excitement level.

Once he was tired he walked very nicely on the leash next to me with very little correction. His sit is very solid but his down is hit and miss. Sometimes he will follow a treat down, and sometimes not. The ball is way more attractive to him than a treat.

Although he never soils his kennel, he is a big marker so it's hard to tell if he has to pee a lot or just wants to. He was only in the house a little bit but I don't think there would be a problem with him marking if he thought he was going to have to sleep there.

Bentley will roll on his back for a tummy scratch and is very submissive to people. We saw no digging in the yard and no chewing or grabbing laundry off the line.

When he met my dogs the hair went up on his back but he did fine and did the curved body and smelling thing that is good dog behavior. After he met them he basically ignored them so I think that while he is okay with other dogs he won't really interact with them all that much. Unless something changes after he is home for a while.

When he chased the ball none of mine competed with him but if they showed some interest in what he was carrying he was protective of it. So maybe it would be best if any other dogs in the household didn't really want to chase a ball or at least weren't obsessed by it.

There was laundry hanging on the line and he didn't bother it. No digging.
He was good in the car and enjoyed the open window and smelling the air.
I had him on a lead in the front yard and he was protective of the yard and would bark at people going by. He didn't go overboard but let me know someone was going by. When he was off the lead in the back yard he didn't bark at the people going by.

I think he would be a good dog for someone who doesn't mind doing some training and teaching him how to relax. I think I will run him more and when I throw the ball at the shelter I am going to ask him to sit.
