Benji's Story

Benji is a 4 year old, 20 pound Maltese looking for his furever home. He was surrendered to a shelter in New York City last year and has been working on socialization and training in his foster home. He previously lived in an apartment with adults and children but did not go outside much. Benji has shown anxiety and fear around strangers, and has bitten strangers who approached him for unsolicited attention. He requires slow, controlled introductions and time to become comfortable and solicit attention when he is ready. Once he trusts you, he is your best friend, rolling on his back for belly rubs and smothering you with kisses. Benji is treat motivated, which can help him to become your friend.

Benji benefits from trazodone before grooming and vet appointments, and sometimes a muzzle. He is neutered and up to date on vaccinations and preventatives. Benji is housetrained and will paw or nip at you to let you know if he needs to potty. He enjoys fruits and vegetables and eats dry kibble. Benji loves squeaky toys and stuffies, tug of war and fetch. He loves being outside going for walks and sniffing around and would really enjoy a fenced yard where he could do zoomies and explore. His foster home has had numerous resident, foster and guest dogs, and Benji has gotten along with all of them.

Benji needs a quiet, adult only home with patient and experienced adopters where he can continue to gain confidence and flourish. If you think you can give this special boy the home he has always deserved, please fill out an adoption contract on our website www.safetails.org or contact us with questions!
