Belle-Licious's Story

Belle-Licous (Belle), joined Mattie's Place in December 2025.

Her DOB: 03/11/2025

Her owner conceded to her lifestyle not matching a dog or puppy and being a 1st time dog owner didn't fully understand the commitment needed. She bought the dog off Kijiji when Belle was only 2 months old. She tried having a puppy for 7 months in a lifestyle that did not suit a puppy, so she became completely overwhelmed and decided surrendering her to rescue was the best for Belle and it was.

I'm thankful she turned to Mattie's Place for support.

Belle arrived under socialized. Her owner worked 12 hour days and often added in overtime, so this pup spent her days crated, waiting for someone to come home for far too many hours a day. Belle sat waiting for someone to teach her everything she needed to know. Waiting to learn how to be a companion pet. Waiting to not be so fearful about everything outside her crate.

Belle had such high anxiety that we added some medication to help her cope; fluoxetine. She has absolutely thrived on the medicated support and once she is settled into her new adoptive home and with training support, she can be weaned off the medication so it's a shorter term training support tool rather than a long term plan. She will go home to her adopter with a minimum 1 month supply and it can be refilled at my veterinarian if needed. I've just refilled her prescription for another 2 months worth for the end of February, so she'll have enough to get through until end of April.

Belle bonds really hard and fast to her people and is still learning to trust strangers, so a quiet home without a lot of human traffic coming and going would be best for her. Adult only home as I wouldn't trust her with her anxiety around kids under 13 years old. I just don't think its her vibe.

Belle is dog friendly and I'm certain would be fine with cats, though not cat tested.

An adopter with nervous dog experience will be important so her body language is read, understood and respected.

Belle will need someone home more often than not, as she absolutely loves her people deeply. She did show some separation anxiety on arrival to Mattie's Place, but she has found her independence with the help of her medication, but given the many crated hours she spent the 1st part of her life in, I don't want that for her again and she's happiest with her person or people. Though she does need to still have her crate time and continue learning how to be comfortable on her own, which she's doing amazing with!

At her spay appointment in December, Belle weighed in at 2.7 kgs / 6 pounds. She was underweight and I'm guessing her ideal weight is 10 - 12 pounds, which we're working towards. Belle had some baby teeth that didn't come out on their own removed at her spay so he oral health is up to date.

She is otherwise a healthy, girl.

Belle will need an adopter ready to jump in with support of a professional trainer and I can make some recommendation for affordable training. She did have a session with a trainer friend that helped her foster work on confidence building and crate training.

Belle does have to be groomed every 2-3 months professionally, with maintenance at home, so please ensure you have that in your budget to keep her coat healthy.

Belle is just a young dog still, so she can absolutely turn her life around in the care of a dedicated and committed adopter willing to put the work in for a dog still learning how to navigate life outside a crate she lived most of her puppy life in.

FROM THE FOSTER:

Elle Loves to play with every toy she finds, even the bigger ones. She plays with my dog like crazy

Really intelligent!! Ask to go outside to do her business by tip taping
at the backyard door. If I get distracted and miss her signs, she uses the pee pad

She is ok by herself, 1.5 hours and then she'll start to cry wanting attention and out of her crate. She sleeps confidently alone in the crate through the night. I used music and treats to help her to relax also.

She eats well 1/2 cup a day

Loves the snow. Hates the rain. Loves treat finding puzzles. Loves to cuddle with you.

She doesnt do stairs, I need to carry her. She doesn’t jump to the sofa, if she want to cuddle she will ask to be picked up.

She will bark at strangers and alarm barks to loud noises outside.

------------------------------------

$875 ADOPTION FEE INCLUDES: spay/neuter, deworming, flea/tick prevention, vaccinations, dentals if needed or any added surgical needed surgical care, food, nose to tail health exam, toys, leash|collar, winter coat (seasonal), poop bags, dishes and 30 days of Trupanion pet insurance with immediate coverage on adoption day for any illness or injury not pre-existing.

----------------------------------------

To note: the above description is relevant to this dog in it's current & previous setting. Home changes & adopter personalities can bring out different behaviours not previously seen.
