Bear's Story

URGENT: Bear Needs a Home
The Unluckiest Dog in the World Is Still Waiting for His Lucky Break

Meet Bear, a sweet and resilient three-legged dog whose spirit and capacity for love far outweigh the hardships he has endured. Despite a very difficult start to life, Bear is a normal, happy dog with a wonderful personality.

Bear is approximately 3 to 4 years old and currently weighs about 50 pounds, with an ideal weight closer to 65 pounds. As a puppy, he was attacked by another dog and lost his front right leg, but he gets around just fine. Bear did very well in foster care for about a year, but his foster person sadly passed away. Due to the stress and loneliness of this loss, Bear developed a rectal prolapse and required three surgeries before the repair remained in place.

Over the past few weeks, Bear has been steadily improving. He is regaining control over his bathroom habits and putting on weight, but when awake, he still needs to go to the bathroom approximately every three hours. Because of the surgeries and trauma he has experienced, his gastrointestinal tract remains inflamed. His current treatment includes prescription food and steroids, and he continues to make gradual progress.

Bear is a great dog. He is very friendly with all people and has a mellow personality. He does not whine or bark. He previously lived with children and a cat and does best with medium or larger dogs. Bear is food-motivated and easily won over with treats. He prefers to play rather than walk, loves playing with balls, and is especially attached to his stuffed animals. Bear is well-mannered and easy-going in his foster home and has a great deal of love to give. He is affectionate, enjoys snuggling, and is good during bath time.

Bear is neutered, up to date on vaccines, and usually house trained, but since he has been ill, has been using training pads (perfectly, we might add). He will go outside, but being in the city, being emaciated + freezing temperatures has made the situation more difficult, if someone can just give him a little grace! Life has not been fair to Bear, but he continues to handle everything with resilience and charm. It is very easy to fall in love with him, and he is ready to fall in love with a new family.

If you are interested in learning more about Bear, please contact AmsterDog at 917-689-8414 or email info@amsterdog.org
. You can apply to foster, adopt, or foster-to-adopt Bear at AmsterDog.org.

Thank you for caring about a pet in need.
