Baxter's Story

I was taught to ring a bell when I want to go outside. I got so good at ringing it that, for some reason, the bell has disappeared. So now I simply stand quietly in front of the back door knowing someone will let me out to go check out everything and lay in the sun.

DESCRIBE YOUR PERFECT DAY.
I am a morning dog. When asked politely I will go back to bed until someone gets up to let me out and then promptly give me breakfast. Once fed, it is siesta time until the morning 1.25 mile walk around the block we take if the weather permits. The rest of my day is filled with naps, going out to see if the neighbor’s dog is out, and naps. I like to alert my humans with a song when it is dinner time. Dinner is followed by putting my head on my human’s knee to get lots of loving scratches.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE TOY?
I love my chicken! I will carry it around whenever I am excited.

DO YOU KNOW ANY TRICKS?
Someone, long ago, really cared about me and taught me to sit and stay (somewhat) and to not jump up on people or the furniture. When I am excited when my humans come home, I will dance around, dying to jump but know I should not. I am excitable but I aim to please!

WHAT SCARES YOU?
I’m scared of someone punishing me for something I’ve done. It seems this has happened to me in the past. If I hear a human yell I will slink around on the floor not knowing what I did wrong. My current humans are very loving and reassure me I am now safe. I do get anxious when left alone. I will pace around with my chicken in my mouth, sometimes bark a little, but eventually settle down. I am a little hard of hearing, so storms and fireworks do not bother me.

HAVE YOU BEEN AROUND CHILDREN?
I have not had the pleasure of meeting children. I’m sure I would love them, but I might need to be watched because I am not a small guy and could knock them over by simply running into them.

DO YOU LIKE CATS?
I have seen cats on walks and sometimes through the window in my backyard. They seem interesting but not enough to give them more than a second look. I have not met them face-to-face yet, so I hold out judgment on that question!

HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT OTHER DOGS?
I love hanging out with my little foster brother pup. He is not big with sharing toys, but I just let him take the toy from my mouth and carry on. I have met other dogs and they have all seemed fine with me. They smell nice!

IF YOU COULD BE ANYWHERE, WHERE WOULD IT BE?
Right next to my human. I’m very loyal and lovable, so wherever they are sounds good to me!

HOW’S YOUR HEALTH?
I am feeling much better, thanks for asking. I was not in the best of shape when my current humans found me wandering the street. I had whipworm and heartworm. My humans helped me get rid of both, and I now have energy and am ready to meet each day with a smile! Getting up there in age, my humans give me a joint supplement each day and that does wonders. I have a fatty lump on my chest. During my first vet visit my vet said I was just a lumpy dog. I took it as a compliment.

WHO DO YOU LIVE WITH?
I live with a couple of super great humans that took me into their home from the street, just like my 22-pound rescued little brother pup. We all get along great! They are sweet people but they don’t have a yard for me to run and play in. Their backyard is all rock and pavement, except for that big swimming pool. That is why I love the morning walks where I can walk on everyone’s front lawn and feel the soft grass between my toes.

WHERE DO YOU HANG OUT WHEN YOU ARE HOME ALONE?
I hang out fairly close to the front door, anxiously waiting for my human’s return. I will bark a little sometimes. I try to be good, because I know they are watching me on a camera they set up.

WHERE DO YOU SLEEP?
I have a very comfy bed all to myself. I can snore to my heart’s delight! It is also great for when I feel like stretching.

DO YOU LIKE WALKING ON A LEASH?
Yes, I love walks! I have a halter with a front clasp that helps to keep me from tugging to get to that next special scent along the walk. A couple of slight tugs lets me know I might be pulling, so I slow down and behave like a gentleman.

DO YOU HAVE ANY “NOT SO GREAT” HABITS THAT WE SHOULD KNOW ABOUT?
I have a tendency to lick my paws. I have been told it might just be anxiety. When I do it, someone will let me know with a loud “Ah!” or a snapping of their fingers. I then look up at them and give my “Oh, ok, I’ll stop” look. I also have a habit of thinking anything on the floor is fair game to be considered a toy when I am left alone. Apparently, the big pillow that I had such a great time gutting was not a toy. That is the only time that happened, honest.

ARE YOU HOUSE TRAINED (DO YOU GO POTTY OUTSIDE)?
Definitely! I had a couple accidents when I first moved in because I did not know how to tell everyone I had to go. They hung a bell at the back door that I ring when I want to go out.

DO YOU LIKE WATER?
There is a swimming pool in my backyard. It is of no interest to me. My humans sometimes give me a nice warm shower in their walk-in shower. I put up with it.

WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT YOUR FOSTER FAMILY?
They seem to really love me. That is all I want --love and attention. I go with them for rides in the car and am, as always, a perfect gentleman. Except my little brother says I take up a lot of his space.

IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE YOU WOULD LIKE TO TELL YOUR FUTURE ADOPTER?
I can remember being with someone before that seemed to care about me because they taught me right from wrong when I was younger. Something happened that caused me to become quite thin and sick and living on the streets. All I want is to be loved and to hopefully be in a home with a backyard and, of course, good food and treats! I know there is someone out there looking for a companion just like me. Please help me find them.

**BAXTER’S ADOPTION FEE IS $100**

If you would like to meet Baxter or have additional questions about this sweet boy, please email his foster parents directly at LetsAdoptBaxter@gmail.com.

NorCal Bully Breed Rescue's Adoption Policy
**We are currently only adopting out to the immediate Sacramento area which includes Sacramento County, parts of Placer County and parts of ElDorado County. We currently hold adoption events once a month at the Pet Food Express store in the Roseville Fountains. Please check our Facebook page for announcements! ADOPTION PROCESS: The first step in the adoption process is the completion of our online adoption application, which can be found on our website: www.norcalbullybreedrescue.org. **Your application will not be reviewed if you do not live with the immediate Sacramento area which is Sacramento County, parts of Placer County or some parts of Eldorado County) The second step is the home check. Our main priority in this step is insuring that your yard is 100% secure - there can be no loose boards or gaps in your fencing. If your dog is going to be spending anytime outside while you are at work or away from home, we ask that you have adequate shade or shelter from the elements. Before we schedule a home check, we may ask you to send us photos of your yard/fencing to get an idea of where the dog will be living. If you have any hesitation or questions about our yard check, please see our section on "How to Prepare for a Home Check." The last step in the adoption process is the meet and greet. This is where we meet with you and any existing pets to ensure proper introductions are made. We want to make sure everyone gets along. Once all introductions are made, and everyone gets along, your rescue dog is yours to adopt. Please note that there is no pressure involved, and if situation that cannot be resolved arises, we will always take our dog back. Also, be aware that there is an acclimation period for each dog and every dog is different. It can take a few days or a few weeks for your new dogs to settle in. We will assist in any way possible, including referring our trainer to come work with you and the dog. ADOPTION PREREQUISITES: All of our dogs are rescues, meaning they have already needed help in some way, and will only to to homes where they will live a "CHARMED LIFE." All of our adoptive dogs will be indoor dogs with outdoor privileges. We believe that dogs are family members, and should be allowed to sleep indoors. The only time they should be kept outdoors is if the weather permits. Any applications looking for an outdoor only dog will be denied. All current pets in your home need to be spayed/neutered, up to date on vaccinations, and one heartworm preventive. Out of area adoptions are within reason and on a case-by-case basis. HOW TO PREPARE FOR A HOME CHECK: Walk the perimeter of your yard. Take notes on the condition of your fence. Are there any loose boards or gaps under any sections of you fencing? If yes, these are easy fixes. You can nail any loose board back into place, and you can fill any gaps with pavers and gravel Do you have a lock on your gate? If not, please purchase one prior to your home check. Is there adequate shade or shelter for your new dog if it is going to be left outdoors while you're at work? Do you have anything hazardous in your yard, i.e. nails sticking out, chemicals left out, etc? Do you have a cat? If so, does your cat have a high spot it can retreat to if being chased? Are your garbage cans located somewhere near a gate where a dog can jump into them to get out? If so please move them. Please address these issues prior to our visit. ADOPTION FEES: All of our dogs will be spayed/neutered, vaccinated, and microchipped prior to being adopted. Our adoption fees are considered to be donations. All donations from adoption go right back into our rescue account, allowing us to continue to help dogs in need. At the bare minimum, the cost to properly vet a dog is $100. But some of the dogs we take on are medical cases, which can cost several thousand dollars. Because of this, we ask the following adoption fees: $500 for puppies, which are any dogs under a year old $300 for most adult dog aged 1 year or older. (French/English Bulldogs have significantly higher adoption fees which are explained on our website.)
