Barry's Story

Meet Barry: The Loyal Senior Who Loves to Stop and Smell the Flowers
~9 yrs old | 13 lbs | Maltese Mix | Non-Shed | Monrovia CA

Barry is a soulful Maltese mix who proves that the best things in life are worth waiting for. This mellow gentleman is the definition of a "slow burn" companion—he may take a moment to trust, but once you are in his circle, you have a devoted friend for life.

He thrives in a calm, predictable environment. He is a submissive boy who respects the space of other pets and hopes for the same in return. While he is a senior, he still has a zest for the simple things. His absolute favorite activities include working on a peanut butter lickmat, enjoying collagen sticks, and proudly bringing you his favorite stuffed snake toy to celebrate your return home.

Barry is house trained but, like many small seniors, he does occasionally mark and is a pro at wearing his belly bands. He is a smart communicator and will let you know when he needs to go outside, usually every 3-4 hours.

Because he has arthritis and is wary of slippery hardwood floors, he needs a home with plenty of rugs or carpeting so he can navigate confidently to his favorite spots (which usually involve being near you!). He takes Galliprant and Omega-3s to stay comfortable and eats a sensitive stomach diet to keep his tummy happy.

On walks, Barry loves to take his time and literally stop to smell the flowers. He is still learning his leash manners and can be vocal when he sees unfamiliar people or dogs. He knows his name and responds wonderfully to positive reinforcement and a patient leader.

Barry prefers a home without children. He has some handling sensitivities and asks that new friends let him approach them first. Once he feels safe, he will seek out your affection and curl up right next to you. He has made great strides with his mild separation anxiety and would love a home where someone is around often and where there is another confident, small dog to keep him company.

Barry is neutered, up to date on vaccinations, microchipped and recently had a dental.

Barry is looking for a patient, adult-only home that understands building confidence takes time. If you enjoy a quiet lifestyle, appreciate the loyalty of a senior dog, and are ready to celebrate the small wins, Barry is waiting to meet you.
