Barkley's Story

Hi, my name is Barkley! I’m a one-year-old American Staffordshire Terrier mix. My birthday is December 8, 2024.

I’m a playful, energetic boy who loves chewing on bones and playing with tough “super chewer” toys. I’m great at tug-of-war and fetch, and I enjoy roughhousing and playing with older kids who can keep up with my energy.

Because I’m a strong and enthusiastic dog, I would do best in a home without small children or elderly people who may be unsteady on their feet, as I sometimes get excited and can accidentally knock people over.

As I’ve grown, I’ve learned that I do best as the only pet in the home. I prefer not to share my food or bones with other dogs, and I have a strong instinct to chase and attack cats. I also chase chickens, and other small animals, but I am usure what I will do when I catch them. Because of that, I’d be happiest in a home where I can be the center of attention.

I’m house and crate trained. If you ask me to go to my crate, I’ll go right in. Like many young dogs, I can get bored if I’m left unattended for too long, and I may chew on things like walls or carpet if I don’t have enough supervision or activity. Having plenty of toys, exercise, and time with my person helps me stay on my best behavior.

I’ve been trained with an underground electric fence system, but I’m a determined guy and have been known to push through it. Because of that, I would do best with a secure physical fence or supervised outdoor time.

I know several basic commands, including sit, lay down, and give paw, and I take treats gently. I’m a very affectionate dog and love being close to my people. Personal space isn’t really my thing, I’m happiest snuggling up in bed or laying right on top of you.

I’m also great for grooming. I enjoy baths and will happily sit or walk into the tub, and I love being brushed.

I’m a loving, loyal dog who would thrive with an active owner who has the time to work with me, give me structure, and share lots of cuddles.
