Bare's Story

Sweet puppy Bare, born August 11, 2025 was born with a breeder of Chinese Crested dogs. With the breeder aging and his health not well, he opted to surrender his remaining breeding dogs and pups and Mattie's Place welcomed 1 puppy.

At Bare's neuter appointment, December 16, 2025, he weighed in at 4.3 kg / 9.5 pounds. The average weight of an adult Chinese Crested is 12 - 15 pounds and Bare is expected to fall into that weight range.

Chinese Crested dogs do require upkeep for their hairless bodies, so you must be committed, educated and have the full capability of this regular maintenance. Chinese Crested are prone to skin irritations, allergies, sunburn and sensitivity to to the environment so speciality care is required.

Bare has a lifespan of 13 to 18 years, so it's super important to be committed for the many years this puppy has ahead and be willing to adjust your lifestyle through the years to make Bare a priority.

The Chinese crested breed is so ancient that no one knows its exact origins. One theory is that much larger hairless dogs were brought from Africa to China at some point in ancient history. The Chinese then bred them down to their current size over the course of multiple generations.

This could've happened in the broad time frame when the Chinese were mastering the art of miniaturizing dog breeds. They created Shih Tzus and Pekingese from similar breeding efforts.

The hairless varieties were specifically bred to thrive on ships and kill any vermin on board. They traveled all over the world and acquired the nickname ā€œChinese Ship Dog.ā€ Sailors would trade them in port towns, which caused distinct lineages to spring up in multiple locations.

The Chinese Crested Dog is an affectionate and playful breed that thrives on close interaction with its owner. They form deep bonds and seek constant companionship, making them happiest when they are the center of attention. To feel secure and emotionally balanced, they require an owner who is present and attentive, providing them with the love and reassurance they need to flourish.

Because Bare is still just a puppy and based on the immense loyalty this breed offers their owners, someone home most often or can take their dog to work will be a preference for Bare.

Bare is a sociable boy and gets along well with both people and other pets, His friendly and gentle nature makes him a treasure to be around, but continued training and socialization is key to maintaining his positive interactions with others.

For all the wonderful that is Bare, he does have a habit of wanting to eat his own poop, which is a new behaviour for him, so we'll be working with our veterinarian to figure out what is driving this behaviour and I'm confident we'll find easy resolve.

Bare is fully vetted, including his neuter & microchip, but will require one further vaccine booster in January 2026, at the cost of Mattie's Place, at our rescue Veterinarian.

FROM THE FOSTER:

Bare has a big personality packed into a tiny, naked body.

This spunky little guy loves a good play session just as much as he enjoys naps, meals, and cozy snuggles.

He may be a bit timid at first, but it doesn’t take long for him to choose his favourite person to shower with kisses and affection.

He's an unapologetic certified goof-ball!

Bare adores his wardrobe, feels extra proud fresh out of the bath, and gets along wonderfully with other small dogs—while still confidently standing his ground when he’s enjoying a chew.

He’s friendly, well-behaved in his crate, happiest close to his humans, and currently mastering pee-pad training (a must during Canadian winters, especially when you’re hairless!).

---------------------------------------

$875 ADOPTION FEE INCLUDES: spay/neuter, deworming, flea/tick prevention, vaccinations, dentals if needed or any added surgical needed surgical care, food, nose to tail health exam, toys, leash|collar, winter coat (seasonal), poop bags, dishes and 30 days of Trupanion pet insurance with immediate coverage on adoption day for any illness or injury not pre-existing.

---------------------------------------

To note: the above description is relevant to this dog in its current & previous setting. Home changes & adopter personalities can bring out different behaviours not previously seen.
