Bam Bams Bday's Story

Special Birthday and Adoption Day write up for Bam Bam from his mom who loves him so much!

Today BamBam is 14 years young! You would never know it, the way he behaves - he is more like a puppy most of the time! It made me get a move on and write his 'happy tail' because he deserves to have his story told while he is still blessing us every day with his presence. The first pics are from soon after he got here, the middle ones from when he rolled in the ashes, and the last 4 are from tonight before dinner. Looks pretty good for an old fart with a rough past doesn't he?? He makes me laugh every day and I love him dearly!

Born 6/25/1997, BamBam is a Pomeranian who started life in a commercial breeding facility. I have no idea when he was able to escape and be moved into rescue, but sadly that did not go well for him at first either. The rescue that took him ended up going bankrupt, and when he was brought to our attention, he had been dropped at a boarding facility where there was a large bill due. I am not sure how I was blessed enough to be chosen as his foster mom, but at first he was a bit of a surprise. I took a crate to pick up a Chihuahua that I had briefly fostered and who had moved on to the same obsolete rescue, and ended up bringing BamBam back home also. Since I didn't have a second crate with me, BamBam rode home snuggled on my lap. Since I didn't hate the name and he'd had it for a long time, that is what he remained. That was in March of 2008.

BamBam was a real mess at just over ten years old. He arrived with one eye sewn closed because he had been in a fight and the eye was damaged. I was the one to remove the stitches and apply ophthalmic ointment, but it sadly didn't work and he was already blind in that eye. He also had lost every tooth and he still has this funny, lopsided little grin because, with no teeth to hold it in, his tongue hangs out the side of his mouth. Even with no teeth, he was very scrappy and to this day holds certain vendettas and still gets into fights! The following year in 2009 he had some bad pain issues and was diagnosed with degenerative discs in his neck. We started with prescription pain meds, but I also started him on a couple of natural supplements. I am happy to say that after a time we were able to do away with medication unless there was a flare up, which also diminished over time to the point we have not had one in the past year or so. For some reason, the hair over his neck and shoulders turned white - either from the injury or the topical meds - so now he kind of looks as though he is wearing a white scarf.

Early in BamBam's thirteenth year we had an inquiry on him from a potential adopter and my heart almost stopped. I started to fret and worry, and wondered how in the world a thirteen year old toothless dog, blind in one eye and with neck problems, could be uprooted after thinking he was finally home and that I was mom for the last almost three years.... So the board members reviewed his case and said they hadn't realized just how much he had aged - and did I want to make him a 'permanent foster'. I jumped on that immediately and now BamBam IS officially home forever!

Bam Bam is the cutest, funniest, most precious little soul you could ever want to meet. He does silly, funny things - like the time we were dipping the dogs in a Cedar oil bath to combat fleas. As soon as he was finished he went and found a pile of ashes in the backyard and rolled around in them until he was a black dog. Now, some people may find that obnoxious, but I laughed until I cried, bathed him and dipped him all over again. He sounds like a seal when he barks, and as soon as his meal is almost ready he starts in with a vengeance. He seems to think that barking hysterically will make me move faster, and he does LOVE his chow! Somewhere late in his twelfth year he learned to give kisses. Since his tongue hangs out the side, he turns his head sideways and kisses out the side of his mouth. It does not stop him from giving a thorough bath now that he has leaned however! He bounces around and even leaps up with all four feet off the ground when excited, and always comes over to say 'hello' to me by putting his feet up and snuggling his head under my chin when I bend down. When I go to pick him up he 'helps' by jumping at me. He is happy and healthy and acts about 2 instead of his age! He is a treasure and I feel so blessed to have him as part of my life, even though it may only be for his senior years. Just don't tell HIM that he's old!
