Balto's Story

~ FROM TRASH TO JOURNEY TO LOVE
A group of friends spotted a dog while stopping at a gas station, just as a large truck was about to hit him; he was seconds away from losing his life on a very busy highway. They acted immediately but had to run between cars and dodge traffic to save him. When they finally reached him, the dog seemed to understand they were there to help. He was gentle, calm, and cooperative, as if he knew his life was being saved. Balto was extremely thin, malnourished, covered in ticks, and very dirty. After asking gas station employees and people nearby, it became clear that he had no owner. That’s when they made the decision to rescue him. They took him into their car, got home where they gave him a much-needed bath, and brought him straight to the veterinarian. The good news: Balto had no life-threatening illnesses, but he was diagnosed with malnutrition, internal and external parasites, Ehrlichia and Anaplasma. With proper treatment, his recovery was fast and very successful

Balto is about 2 years old, weighs 27 kilos, and is a handsome Shepherd mix.

Balto gets along very well with people of all ages and does well with other dogs at the shelter. He is a social dog, but at times he can become very excited and try to take on a leader role during play, which may come across as a bit bossy. When playing with other dogs, he usually plays appropriately; however, if the play becomes too intense or out of control, he may respond defensively and get into a scuffle. If another dog attacks him, Balto will defend himself.
Balto has been around cats, but he can be rough and overly enthusiastic, so a cat free house would be best. He does not show food aggression and is not possessive of toys or sleeping areas. He is also very stable and confident, as loud noises, heavy traffic, and thunderstorms do not stress him. Balto is a dog with very high energy and a strong need for activity. He loves to play, run, and interact and is well socialized, but he truly thrives with structure and regular exercise. He would do best in a home with an active family and preferably a large space where he can safely run and burn off energy. With the right environment and guidance, Balto will be a loyal, fun, and loving companion for an active household.

Balto’s adoption fee is $550, which includes his flight, neuter, vaccinations, and full vetting.
