Bagel's Story
Bagel is truly one of a kind. She’s a gentle, sweet-natured girl who has already overcome so much in her young life, and she deserves nothing less than a home filled with patience, unconditional love, and security. Bagel is estimated to be around 2 years old, weighs about 50–55 lbs, and is fully grown. While her medical records list her as a Lab mix, without a DNA test we cannot confirm her breed. What we do know is that she has a heart of gold and endless potential just waiting to shine through.

Bagel’s journey hasn’t been an easy one. She was found as a stray alongside her puppies and brought into a crowded Texas shelter. Life in a kennel is no place for a mother with young babies, but thankfully, a kind vet tech from the shelter opened her home and welcomed the whole little family into foster care. Since then, all of Bagel’s puppies have found homes of their own, leaving this resilient mama still waiting for her forever family.

When Bagel first arrived at the shelter, she had a severe case of cherry eye. Fortunately, she was able to undergo surgery, made a full recovery, and today you’d never even know she had the condition. Healthy and ready, Bagel is prepared to begin her next chapter.

Bagel is incredibly sweet but also a little shy, which is understandable given her past. She needs adopters who can meet her where she is—giving her time to settle, decompress, and blossom at her own pace. Once she feels safe, Bagel’s affectionate and playful side shines through with silly zoomies and gentle nudges for attention.

Her foster reports that Bagel adjusts surprisingly well to the chaos of a noisy, busy household. Indoors she is relaxed and happy, but in new surroundings she can be nervous and unsure about walking on a leash. She is learning, but leash training will continue to take patience. Bagel prefers to be the only princess of the household, though she has done fine with a larger, laid-back dog who respects her space. She does not enjoy other dogs jumping on her, but once comfortable she can coexist peacefully. She has also shown that she can live with cats, though she thrives best when not forced into high-energy interactions.

Bagel enjoys lying in the sun, soaking up pets, and simply being near her trusted people. Grooming is still intimidating to her, and she is nervous around brushes, but with gentle, positive experiences, she will continue to build confidence.

Because Bagel is shy in new situations and nervous in public, she will do best in a calm, mellow household with a predictable routine. She has had minimal exposure to children, and while she may be able to adjust to older, respectful kids who understand her boundaries, a home without young children would be best.

Bagel would likely thrive as an only dog, soaking up all the attention for herself. However, she could also do well with a calm, respectful canine companion. A fenced yard would be wonderful so she can safely run, play, and explore, but we are open to considering other living arrangements on a case-by-case basis. More than anything, Bagel needs an adopter who is home more often than not, has dog experience, and understands that she is not a “ready-made” pet. She will take time to fully flourish, but the joy of watching her blossom will be more than worth the effort.

Health & Heartworm Status:
Bagel has tested positive for heartworm, but this should not deter her perfect adopter. Heartworm is not contagious and is treatable with proper care. Many wonderful dogs are overlooked simply because of their heartworm status, but Bagel deserves a chance.

She has already completed the first stage of treatment, a 28-day course of doxycycline, and now needs an adopter willing to continue her care through either the slow-kill or fast-kill method. We recommend that adopters discuss both options with their veterinarian and research the associated costs in advance. With proper treatment and consistency, Bagel can go on to live a long, healthy, and happy life.

Bagel is spayed, microchipped, up to date on vaccinations, dewormed, and on monthly preventatives. She is currently undergoing heartworm treatment but is otherwise healthy and ready for her forever family.

Adoption Information:
All of our dogs, including Bagel, are located in Texas and will be transported to adopters once their adoption is finalized. Transport is included in the adoption fee. Breed labels are based on appearance and records, but we always encourage adopters to focus on personality, needs, and long-term compatibility rather than breed guesses.

Bagel has so much love to give and so much potential to grow into the amazing dog she was always meant to be. What she needs most is someone willing to give her the chance she deserves. With time and love, she will reward her family with unwavering loyalty, joy, and companionship for years to come.

MA License #479
