Baba's Story
Meet Baba!

***Foster Family Update!***

He's doing sooooo well. An absolute love bug. Gets along great with both of my dogs (40lbs and 10lbs). Did a lovely job at the dog park this weekend on a long lead and walks well on his leash. Will definitely benefit from some obedience training to get his confidence up but isn't too big a trouble maker- definitely a counter surfer, but doesn't need to be crated to leave the house or sleep- no destructive separation anxiety. But he DOES jump for joy when you get home and he loves hugs- standing up on his hind legs with his front paws on your torso, legitimately wanting to be hugged and pet this way. It's incredibly charming. He would be a great starter dog, considering his relatively lazy and extremely affectionate nature. He's truly a gem, and I think the first people to show interest in him will probably fall in love immediately just like I have.

This handsome former street pup is one of the lucky dogs who came to us in Oregon from The Ranch at Chapala - an incredible rescue just outside Guadalajara, Mexico, and one of our trusted partners in saving dogs who deserve a second chance.

Baba had an owner in Mexico who had to give him and another pup up because of a medical situation, which was meant to be temporary. However, it didn't work out for the owner to take them back, so Baba is looking for his new home here in the States!

This lucky boy is one of four special pups who made the journey north together and who are now settling into loving foster homes in the greater Portland area. With his gentle eyes, charming personality, and resilient spirit, he's already winning hearts wherever he goes.

Like so many of our rescue dogs from Mexico, this pup's early life likely involved uncertainty - whether born as a stray or surviving the streets, he's one of the fortunate ones who now has the chance to live a safe, joyful, and secure life with a family of his own.

This pup is currently getting lots of love, care, and guidance from his foster family as he decompresses, adjusts, and learns what it means to be part of a home. We're already hearing that he's sweet, curious, and eager to bond - and we can't wait to continue learning more about his emerging personality.

As with any rescue pup, This pup's future family should be ready to provide patience, consistency, and kindness as he settles in. Continued socialization, positive training, clear boundaries, and plenty of physical and mental enrichment (puzzle toys! sniff walks! little adventures!) will help him grow into the confident, happy companion he's meant to be.

Stay tuned for new photos and updates as we discover more about this wonderful pup - but one thing is certain: this incredible pup is ready to begin his new chapter and will bring endless love, joy, and gratitude to a very lucky home.

The Ranch Shelter Notes:

Baba is a dog of the world... or the galaxy... or maybe even the universe! Why else would he have a constellation of spots on his body? This handsome boy, who has lived in a home before, embodies all that is good! Baba is excellent on leash, equally happily walking sedately next to you or running alongside. He is a calm, thoughtful dog, not super hyper. Baba has lovely, gentle brown eyes framed by soft, velvety ears and a lovely white facial stripe. His stunning black and white markings - including those tiny stars! - are unique and allow you to spot him (ha! See what we did there?) instantly in a crowd! Baba likes his treats, so he should be a quick study for training ... and with his smarts, we are certain he will eagerly lap it up! Baba is not overly interested in toys, but that might change once he gets his own space. Maybe you could help him discover his favorite plaything? Show this boy your world, and he will bring you the universe!
Baba weighs about 22 kg.

This amazing pup is officially ready to start its Oregon adventure. Could that adventure be with you?

If you've been dreaming of adding a new furry family member, don't wait! Submit your adoption application today for the chance to meet this amazing pup, begin a flexible 3-7 day in-home adoption trial, and maybe even welcome this sweet him/her into your life for good.

Could this pup be your next loyal companion and you their new lucky hero?

steps to adopting

(OUR ADOPTABLE DOGS ARE IN SEPARATE TEMPORARY FOSTER HOMES BETWEEN BEND/CENTRAL OREGON AND THE GREATER PORTLAND AREA. THEREFORE, MEET AND GREETS ARE NOT DONE AT OUR FACILITY. TO LEARN MORE, PLEASE SUBMIT YOUR ADOPTION APPLICATION ONLINE AND OUR ADOPTION PROGRAM MANAGER WILL REACH OUT TO YOU WITH FURTHER INSTRUCTIONS ON HOW TO MEET YOUR NEW PUP!)

The first step to adopting a dog from SDH is to complete the adoption application. First click on the "OUR DOGS tab up above, and then click on the orange colored "Fill out an Adoption Application here" button to start the process). Once submitted, please expect 3-5 business days or sooner for processing and to hear back from us. Once you are pre-approved, your adoption application will remain on file with us for 1 year and it can go towards multiple adoptions within that 1 year time frame before it expires.

To finalize an adoption you must sign the adoption contract and pay the full adoption fee. The adoption fee helps cover our costs. On average, per dog, it costs SDH between $500-$700 for vetting/medical/sterilization, transport and other rescue related expenses. All dogs are rescued and do not transport to SDH until they are healthy and ready to be adopted. All dogs are examined by a veterinarian before they fly, which includes sterilization whenever possible, given standard vaccines and rabies (if age appropriate). Most dogs are sterilized before they come into our program, however if this is not the case we will spay/neuter them once they arrive at our cost.

Upon their arrival, all dogs are seen for a wellness exam by SDH's medical team. Once the adoption is finalized, any further medical care or treatment will not be covered by SDH, unless discussed prior with our medical team. All known issues are disclosed to the best of our ability prior to finalizing the adoption.
