AXEL's Story
Axel is a 3-year-old Labrador mix with a heart as big as his journey.

When Axel arrived at Macomb County Animal Control, he had clearly been through more than any dog ever should. He was surrendered in very rough condition, suffering from a painful skin disease called Sarcoptic Mange. The condition left him extremely itchy, and from constant scratching and chewing, much of his fur had fallen out. In some areas, his skin became thickened and irritated.

But Axel’s story is not one of defeat — it’s one of resilience.

When he first came in, he was completely shut down. Terrified and unsure of the world around him, Axel didn’t eat or move for several days. Staff gave him time, patience, and gentle care. Slowly, he began to trust. He allowed his handlers to take him outside. He started eating again. And little by little, the light came back into his eyes.

Today, Axel is a wildly different dog.

He is happy, playful, and full of life. He absolutely adores attention from his people and thrives on affection. He loves running around outside, going for walks, and taking in all the smells the world has to offer. Sniffing adventures are his favorite! Axel also enjoys playing with other dogs and would likely do well with a canine companion.

Axel is looking for a calm, laid-back home where he can continue to heal — both inside and out. He wants endless love, cozy cuddles, and a family that understands that while his fur may still need time to grow back, his heart is already whole.

If you are interested in adopting me or another homeless pet at Macomb County Animal Control, walk-in adoption hours are Monday-Friday from 10am-4pm.
