Athena - Long Coat Puppy 's Story
This dog is being fostered in Dallas TX and must be adopted within the Dallas or North Central Texas area.

NAME: Athena
GENDER: Female (Spayed)
AGE: About 7 months
WEIGHT: About 5 pounds
DOGS/CATS: Gets along with other small dogs, No with large dogs, Unknown with cats
CHILDREN: Should be fine with older, mature children (13 and older)

Introducing adorable Athena. Athena is a Greek name meaning “wisdom” and symbolizing intelligence and courage. This name fits this girl so well. She is a very smart puppy and is quick to learn.

Athena was found dumped in an industrial complex in Garland TX (a suburb of Dallas) with several other Chihuahuas. She was picked up by Garland Animal Services. None of the Chihuahuas had identification. When no owners stepped up to claim her, CRT rescued her from the shelter environment and brought her into a CRT foster home.

Athena’s foster Mom says she is one of the best puppies they have ever fostered (and they have fostered multiple puppies for CRT!). Athena is fun and playful. And she is super loving. You are about to fall for this girl!

Athena gets along with other small dogs in her foster home. She has a lot of energy and loves to run and play with them. She does zoomies in the backyard every day. Athena also loves to cuddle with her siblings. She has a loving, caring side and often checks in on her siblings to make sure they are doing well. Athena loves toys of all kinds. Every day she gets the toys out of the toy box and will strategically position them around the house. She leaves some in her bed, some in the play area, some in every room in little piles. Then she runs from pile to pile playing with them. She plays for hours with her toys!

Athena loves going outside and exploring the yard. Note that Athena is small and therefore will always need her human nearby while she is out (there are instances where hawks or large birds will swoop down and pick up small dogs under 5 pounds, so you will want to be there to protect Athena). We also want to emphasize that your fence must be very secure. Athena is so tiny that she can easily slip under the smallest opening in a fence, so she will need to be in a home with a solid, wooden fenced yard. Athena loves to run and explore, so her home will need to be secure in all aspects.

Athena is a bit cautious when she meets new people. She tends to bark at people she does not know (“stranger danger”). Once she knows she is safe, she settles down and is ready to be friends. Athena loves to snuggle with her humans. This little girl is a velcro dog with her humans. She loves to follow you around the house to see what you are working on. Whatever it is, she wants to be a part of it. Note that she is very active and loves to be right by your feet, so could be a tripping hazard! And she definitely wants to be on your lap while you watch TV in the evenings.

Athena is about 7 months old. She currently weighs about 5 pounds, and our vet thinks she is done growing. Athena has a light colored golden coat with white highlights. She has a long coat and may need occasional grooming as she grows. Her ears and eyes are beautiful.

Athena has done great with her potty training. She has only had one accident in her foster home and the fosters say that was their fault for not noticing that she needed to go out! She is a great listener and has learned to “sit” for treats. Athena is crate trained and will quietly sleep in her crate all evening. We have begun working with her on a harness and a leash so she can get used to walking.

The ideal home for Athena would be one with high energy. She would love to have another young dog (maybe 1-3 years) to play with. Applications will not be considered where she would be the only dog. Due to her small size, we do not recommend large dogs as a companion with Athena. Athena needs a family who can check on her every 4-6 hours (would not be a good fit for a family that works 10-12 hour days). She does “talk” (bark) when she wants attention or hears strange noises, so we do not think she would do well in an apartment environment. There are no children in her foster home, but is a friendly little girl. Due to her tiny size, we recommend a home with older, mature children (13 and older).

Athena is being fostered in the DFW (Texas) area. If this sweet girl sounds like the right fit for your home, our CRT adoption form can be found at: http://www.chihuahua-rescue.com/adoption-application/ If the application submits correctly, the system will send you a copy. If you do not receive a copy into your email que, it did not submit. Feel free to email us at DFWCoordinator@chihuahua-rescue.com if you need help with the application.

Athena is spayed, up-to-date on vaccinations, microchipped, HW negative. and on heartworm prevention. She is ready to join a loving family – could that family be yours?

This dog is a CRT rescue. Reference checks, adoption contract and $350.00 adoption donation required.

As part of our mission to reduce the number of unwanted and sick dogs, we require that all current pets are spayed or neutered, current on vaccinations and taking heart worm prevention. Applications will not be considered if one or more of these requirements are not met.

After filling out an adoption application (found at http://www.chihuahua-rescue.com/adoption-application/), please email DFWCoordinator@chihuahua-rescue.com if you are interested in this dog. Please be sure to read about our adoption process and then fill out an adoption application before emailing the contact person.
