Athena's Story

I'm Athena and I am 1 years old! I am a smart, active girly that can't wait to find a furever home! I came into the shelter as a stray and my owners called and felt it was best they didn't reclaim me. True to my breed (shepherd mix) I have lots of energy and I'm very smart. That's part of the reason I ended up here. I kept getting loose, mostly breaking my tie outs. The lack of exercise and my need to expel my energy made for a dangerous situation because I kept getting bored and getting loose, so my owners were afraid I would eventually get hit on the busy road they lived off of. I would prefer a home with a fence but this isn't a deal breaker if you are willing to train me (like I said I am very smart!) and be sure to give me plenty of exercise. Daily walks would be a must if you don't have a fenced in yard. I'm not the biggest on toys but I do like a good bone to chew. I had young kids in my home and I was happy living with them. I am crate trained for when you need to go to work or make a grocery run, and I am also housetrained! What more could you ask for, I'm young and willing to learn so please take a chance on me and you wont be disappointed. I will always make sure you get your daily steps in!!

I was adopted for a short time. I did really well with the other dog in the home, I was housetrained, I listened to basic commands and I did really well with the kiddos in the home! However, I did not make good friends with the cats and therefore did not make a good companion for this particular family. They were so sad they had to surrender me, and said if I was cat friendly, that they 100% would have kept me. I just happen to have a prey drive for small animals, including cats, which is another trait of my breed.Give the shelter a call at (574) 267-3008 or email them at info@awlwarsaw.com if you have any questions about me! If not, stop by the shelter at 1048 S 325 E in Pierceton, IN 46562 to look at me! No appointments necessary!

Animal Welfare League of Kosciusko County's Adoption Policy
Out of county adopters are also welcomed. -------------------------------------------------------- The procedure for adopting one of our animals is as follows: You walk in, either by appointment or as a walk-in, and our adoption tech will take you to meet the pets. If any of the animals interest you, you can take them out of their cages and spend time with them in a cuddle room or take a walk outside with them (for dogs). Our staff will then answer any questions you may have, explain our trial adoption process to you (explained below) and help you decide if this pet is the perfect fit for your family! If you are adopting a dog and there is another dog in your home, we ask you to come back for an assisted meet and greet with your current pet! You then sign our contract and staff will approve of it before asking for your ID and method of payment. Once we have all of the information we need, you can take your pet home! It's that easy! We try to make the adoption process simple and enjoyable for you and your new pet. Please come in for a visit and give us a try! Trial Adoption: We highly recommend our trial adoption program where you pay for the pet up front (there is no extra fee for the trial) and then take it home for about 5-7 days (we are flexible with this) to see how it fits in with your lifestyle and other pets in the home. If everything works out, great, just call us and let us know you want to finalize and that is when you receive the microchip number and medical papers as well as a goody bag! If it doesn't work out, you bring the pet back and you will receive a full refund. Nursery Nanny Program: We also offer a nursery nanny program for our kittens! If you find one you like, you can take it home the same day even if it is not spayed/neutered yet. We ask that you bring it back for the kitten's spay/neuter date and if it needs to return for any vaccinations! We don't finalize the adoption until the kitten has been spayed/neutered and caught up on vaccines. ADOPTION FEES: $180 for puppies under 9 months, $150 for dogs up to 5 years, $75 for senior dogs, $105 for kittens under 9 months, $95 for adult cats up to 5 years and $65 for senior cats. Fees include: spay/neuter, microchip & registration, vaccines for the year, including the rabies vaccine, and flea & tick and heartworm preventatives
