Arlo was rescued on August 13, 2022 from the York County Animal Shelter. He was taken in as a stray in June and weighed 33 pounds. He was heartworm positive. He is estimated to be around 18 months old. He has completed heartworm treatment and is now 60 pounds! He is a healthy boy!

Although he spent much of his time in foster care on crate rest for heartworm treatment, foster mom has had the opportunity to observe his nature and interactions with people and other creatures. Arlo is good with people. He greets new people with curiosity and without fear. He is happy to let strangers (including small children) pet him. He is still working to keep all paws on the ground, and will occasionally jump onto a person to greet with a hug or a kiss. However, he redirects easily when reminded "paws on floor." Arlo is good with other dogs. He is our only dog, but he has had many opportunities to meet other dogs on leash, on the other side of our fence (two adjoining neighbors have dogs) and off leash playing with his "girlfriend" Aya. Arlo is not great with our cat. I have no sense that he would cause her harm, but he continues to chase her and bark/whimper at her. I have used both ultrasound device and spray water bottle to redirect with some (mostly temporary) success. Arlo does well in the car, but does need to be restrained. I have an SUV with a gate for the cargo area. In spite of my best efforts, I have not been able to install the gate in a way that he cannot get over or under. I have two short chain leashes that I now use to tether him to the car.

Arlo loves meal time! He is not a picky eater. He has been on a diet of Purina One Smart Blend True Instinct and receives 2 cups twice/day. He receives treats (Blue Dog Bakery "cookies" are a favorite!) for going potty. He loves Kongs filled with pumpkin, mashed banana and Greek yogurt; I freeze them so that they last longer. His favorite treat is a Butcher Shop beef bone - YUM!! I have not identified a food that Arlo does not like. He is very food motivated, which has been good for training. Arlo knows basic commands: sit, down, stay. He is a smart, yet sometimes stubborn pup! He seems genuinely eager to please his humans.

Arlo loves walks, runs and hikes. Arlo has pretty good leash manners, but does better with the pinch collar rather than traditional during walks or runs. Arlo has been allowed off leash when hiking remotely and has behaved very well and followed verbal commands to return, sit, stay. He will be an excellent companion for the active adopter. This active boy will need lots of exercise!

Arlo is not perfect, however ... Arlo is an aggressive chewer. His favorites are Kongs, Nylabone and rope toy. He loves to play tug-of-war. My experiments with letting him stay in the house out of the crate have been mostly successful, but he will gladly find other things to chew if left unsupervised. He has gnawed: socks, shoes, bed linens, iPhone charger, wooden drying rack, leash, dog bed and furniture. He will counter surf and steal from the trash. We are working to modify these behaviors, but I believe he will need someone who is home more than foster mom is to monitor/modify.

Arlo is an "honorary" pointer. His Embark DNA results reveal he is ZERO percent pointer! Although he fooled our vet, too. He impersonates well! He is a beautiful dog and is often complimented on what a handsome boy he is! He has gorgeous eyes and the most dainty white eyelashes. He sheds, but not as much as my previous pointer. He will make some family very, very happy.

Arlo has been neutered and microchipped. He is also up to date on vaccines.
