April's Story

APRIL THE DOG
7-5-2026
New Hope for Eastern Oregon Animals

April is a young 11-month-old female black labrador retriever. She was found with another stray dog, Balto, on Lee Lane, east of the Baker City airport in late March, 2026. Unclaimed by her owner April entered the prison dog training program in early April, 2026.
Working with her she was found to be a delightful young lab. She is a loving young lab who enjoys people, and enjoys most dogs. While she is healthy and enjoys being active, she also enjoys companionship and can spend quality time hanging out with her person. In addition to be affectionate, she is also intelligent and did well in her training. She knows approximately 20 commands or cues, and walks well on leash. And is potty trained.
Aside from her training she is a shy dog around strangers and new strange places. It takes her time to adjust to new things but in time she does. She is not trained to hunt and retrieve as a hunting dog. She does enjoy playing ball. She also can play a little rough with some dogs and must be corrected to play in a kind, less forceful way. Supervision will be necessary for a while.
She has been trained via positive reward methods and responds well to praise and treat rewards. She would not respond well to a person who uses force or punishment with her, meaning it would not be successful and she should not be exposed to such an environment. She is current on all vaccinations and awaiting spay.
Her perfect home would be a very secure fenced yard. Daily exercise with her person including walks or hikes. Living and sleeping indoors with her person. Please consider this sweet, well trained young dog.
A list of her commands are as follows:
LOOK
TOUCH
ATTENTION
SIT
STAY
OFF
DOWN
WAIT
COME
HEEL
EASY
BE KIND
QUIET
NO PULL
LETS GO
LEAVE IT
BACK
LOAD UP
CRATE
QUIET
