Ambra's Story

Meet Ambra, a beautiful shepherd with a long coat and a gentle nature. When she arrived, her vet team quickly came together to save her from possible euthanasia. Her family had not been able to get her help for five days because they live in a very rural area, where the nearest emergency vet is a three-hour drive away.

She is now recovering from injuries after being hit by a car and having surgery. Ambra has an infection in her leg, so we are waiting for test results to see if her antibiotics need to be changed. For the next 6 to 8 weeks, she will visit the hospital once a week for bandage changes and will rest in her crate, with two short 5 min. walks each day for bathroom breaks. We were anticipating twice-weekly bandage changes, but her first bandage change on April 8th showed that she's healing faster than anticipated, so bandage changes have been reduced to once a week for now. Ambra has a long recovery ahead and will need ongoing care during this time. Any support, such as donations, supplies, or kind messages, is truly appreciated as we help her heal. Please let your friends who love long-coat shepherds know about Ambra so we can find her a fantastic forever home.

Ambra enjoys her meals, takes her medicine calmly, and loves being petted and hearing that she's a good girl. She doesn't mind her cone to keep her bandages intact, but appreciates having it off so she can eat her meals and drink water more easily. We've discovered that she loves attention and snuggles. In her small potty yard, she stays close to her foster mom, who has to trick her with treats to get some distance for a full-body picture. When she's out of her crate for pottying and gets some downtime with her foster mom before crating, she loves to be touching. Belly rubs are a favorite, too, which she rewards with the gentlest kisses.

Ambra is also discovering toys; she's gravitated to firm-chew toys like Benebones, bones filled with goodies, and the Woof balls with fillings to lick, right next to her foster mom.

She's graduated from a full-leg splint/bandage to a partial-leg splint/bandage, which will likely be more comfortable for her. Although she's very manageable off leash right now in the small yard due to her proximity needs, she's a young dog and will need a leash to go potty as her leg and hip heal further, and she becomes more mobile and adventurous.

We look forward to sharing more updates as Ambra heals and her coat grows back. Once her vet team clears her, she will be able to meet the other dogs in her foster home and make new friends.

While Ambra recovers, your support through financial donations, supplies to keep her mind engaged with enrichment toys, or good wishes would mean a lot and is greatly appreciated. Our wishlists at Chewy and Amazon provide a general idea of our needs. Ambra is currently eating Purina Pro Plan kibble, which we can obtain at approximately $70 per bag with our discounts.

We are grateful that Ambra's medical care is through the UCDVMTH Fracture Program for Rescue Animals. If you would like to help, we encourage you to donate to the Fracture Program in support of Ambra's care here. It's a fantastic service that has helped other shepherds in our program in prior years and other shelter animals as well.

Ambra's treatment could require more surgeries, but for now, only her spaying surgery is planned once she has healed from her current injuries.

Ambra will be ready for adoption once she is medically cleared and has been spayed.

Have you checked out our YouTube channel? We would greatly appreciate your support by subscribing, liking, and commenting on the videos we share of our adoptable shepherds in action. You can also follow us on Instagram, Facebook, and our newest Threads account, where we post plenty of news and updates about our shepherds.

As a foster-based rescue, ShepHeroes is always in need of fosters. You provide the love, and we'll provide everything else! Saying "yes" today truly saves a life. Complete this https://www.shepheroes.org/foster-form, and we'll be in touch ASAP! ShepHeroes's Adoption Policy
Our dogs are available to meet approved adopters through appointments and at various posted events throughout Northern California. Since each GSD we rescue has been let down by their previous caregivers, we are committed to ensuring that their second chance is a forever one. Our adoption application allows us to find the best possible match for them and for you. The decision to adopt a pet is an important one that we take seriously. Please take the time to read the questions and carefully complete the application. Please include full explanations with as much information as possible - this will help us with the review of your application If renting, your landlord's consent is required to proceed with your application. Our landlord permission form is embedded in the application and is required before your application can be processed. We primarily assist at-risk dogs and serve adopters in Northern California. We are currently focused in the following counties: Alameda, Contra Costa, El Dorado, Marin, Monterey, Napa, Placer, Sacramento, San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Santa Cruz, Solano, Sonoma and Yolo, and on a limited basis the Ft. Bragg area of Mendocino County and Lake Tahoe region of Washoe County, NV. Our area of coverage shifts based on volunteer resources. As an all-volunteer rescue, we may not respond as quickly as we would like. We appreciate your patience while we work through the adoption process. Our goal is to respond to you within a week of your application. 1. Submit Application We seek adopters with previous GSD or large breed experience for the best fit and prefer to adopt within our local geographic region. 2. Interview After submission, you'll receive an email indicating the status of your application and information on assignment to an adoption counselor (AC). 3.
