Amber's Story

Most mama dogs with newborns want their own space and don't want other pets around. We just got two mamas in, Amber & Alice, and we placed them and their newborn litters each in a warm quiet room with a dog door out to their own potty space. They came to us from a hoarding situation, via a shelter and they are unsocialized, traumatized and freaked out. One mama shut down completely, huddled in the corner with her pups without really caring for them while the other went out the dog door and spent frantic hours trying to escape the secure outdoor area and leaving her pups alone. In 40 years of caring for abandoned mamas with litters, including many hoarding cases, we've never had any this bad. We believe the mamas are probably sisters and we next tried putting both in the same room, but each with their own bed and pups in different corners of the room. Alice immediately left her pups, jumped out of her bed and climbed in to huddle next to Amber. They didn't greet each other, but just pressed against each other, taking a little comfort. We left both alone for a while to decompress and we when we come back Alice had gone back to her pups and Amber had joined her, leaving her own pups alone. We then placed Amber's pups in with the two moms and all is well. The moms are around 15 pounds and the 8 pups are probably around a week old.

Applications at:

http://dogwoodanimalrescue.org/adoption-application-dogs/

You can follow us on social media at:

https://.www.instagram.com/dogwoodanimalrescue/
https://.www.facebook.com/.DogwoodAnimalRescue/

Making a difference, one animal at a time.
