Alice's Story

Meet Alice, my absolutely gorgeous blue merle Australian Shepherd mix foster dog. She could be an Aussie-Border Collie mix or even a purebred; we have no way of knowing for sure. She is about 3 years old, weighs in at 50 lbs and can smile! What are three big things I can tell you about her? In order of importance, she is extremely energetic, she is extremely energetic and she is extremely energetic. She is also smarter than a lot of humans I’ve met. She will need a great deal of physical exercise and mental stimulation. Herding, advanced obedience, agility, jogging or biking, chasing balls, and playing Frisbee would be constructive outlets for her enthusiasm. One of the most capable breeds in all of dogdom, the Aussie excels at the highest levels of competition. Boredom leads to destructive behavior and barking.

Alice LOVES playing with other dogs and would absolutely adore a sibling of her own energy level. We don’t know how she reacts to cats. She likes adults and, although she has not been around children, I believe she would get on well with them – though she may try to herd the younger ones. She wants to be with her people all the time.

This girl is a dazzling diamond in the rough. She is housebroken, chews only on her bones and doesn’t dig. Though she’s not too hot on the idea of crating up, she can be crated and eventually settles down. She needs basic training (sit, down, stay, come, leave it, off, walking on leash, etc.) and requires a good course or two in house manners. She is readily trainable, as I said earlier - one very smart doggy. She does not guard her food, but shows some indication of guarding high value items like juicy bones (so I guard my chocolate truffles …). Alice shows mild separation nervousness, some whining and barking, so would do best if not left alone for long hours without another animal or human companion.

Alice will make an incredible companion for someone willing to provide her enough exercise and training to keep her active body and equally active mind satisfied. Her ideal family would have a home with a fenced yard and a very active lifestyle which she could be a routine part of.

Please see this site for information on the breed to decide if your situation is a good fit with Alice. http://www.akc.org/breeds/australian_shepherd/index.cfm

Her adoption fee of $325 includes: vet exam, heartworm test (neg), distemper combo vaccination, Bordetella and rabies vaccination, fecal test, deworming, flea control, microchip and spay.
