Alfie's Story

How would you like a snugly, loving, energetic German Shepherd who would like nothing more than to be with you (assuming you also have food and toys)? Be prepared to provide LOTS of pets, along with chew toys, soft toys, balls—and a place in your lap for him to rest his soft head.

Alfie (then known as "Alpha") was surrendered to Chicago Animal Care and Control. He doesn’t seem to have known his name—so we suspect he hadn’t had a lot of attention. He’d like to make up for that now. He’s tall, but still has lots of puppy energy. He’s happy to play any game—fetch, tug, follow the leader—as long as it’s with you. He wouldn’t mind a dog friend or two, either. His foster sister is elderly, and would prefer him to sleep peacefully next to her, which he is also happy to do.

Alfie is housebroken, and sleeps in his crate at night. But you will need to be in the same room as the crate, or he’ll let you know how miserable he is without you nearby. We suspect that he’d be fine sleeping outside his crate, too.

Alfie has LOTS of play drive, and is learning that jumping up to welcome you (or your guests) is NOT ok. He has a BIG alarm bark, but warms up to newcomers, once introduced. He loves having his ears and chest rubbed. Belly rubs are new for him.
Though he was not drastically underweight when he came into foster care, Alfie is VERY interested in his food—and is working on learning to wait a few moments before digging in. He’s also a fan of treats, and sometimes takes them a little too quickly. But he wants to please, and has improved. He is also a table and counter investigator, and will snack on whatever you’re having, if you don’t supervise him closely.

Alfie will need leash training, as he tends to pull. He’s very interested in other dogs and bunnies. We think he’d be fine with the dogs, but not so great with other pets—though he’s not expressed strong interest in our chickens. He may also be a little too much energy for a small dog.
If you have time to spend, are willing to provide training, and most of all LOTS of love to give—Alfie would be happy to be your loyal German Shepherd companion for the rest of his life.
