Alberto's Story
#Alberto

Alberto was surrendered after a frightening incident where he reportedly fell off a bed and began having trouble walking. Shortly after, he showed balance and neurological issues.
We still do not fully know what caused this.
It’s possible he experienced some kind of neurological event, and unfortunately we still don’t know the full extent of what may be going on with him.
We’re going to be completely honest about Alberto because he deserves that.
Yes, he can seem intimidating when you first get him out of his kennel. He grumbles, mumbles, growls under his breath, and carries on enough that people walking by will actually stop and turn around because they think he’s being aggressive.

But the reality is… Alberto has NEVER done anything aggressive toward any of our volunteers.
Not once.
Truthfully, we honestly don’t even think he sees all that well. We think he gets startled and frightened easily, so he reacts the only way he knows how — by sounding tough.
He does not like a lot of touching, especially around his back end, and we respect that. So the volunteers just talk him through it. We’re basically like, “Okay buddy, we know… let’s keep moving.” And he does.
He’s actually very easy to get out and really no trouble at all. He mostly keeps to himself. He loves his routine, his feedings, and his treats. And if you’ve ever seen him gallop across the parking lot when he knows food is waiting for him, you’d see there really is a sweet dog underneath all the grumbling.

We know posts like this probably are not what gets people lining up to adopt a dog. But we also know Alberto does not deserve to spend the rest of his life sitting in a kennel being misunderstood.
The reality is… Alberto is not thriving here.
With a full shelter, it is hard to give dogs like Alberto all the time they truly need. But despite that, we HAVE seen small steps with him. Small improvements. Small moments where he lets his guard down. And right now, those little victories mean everything to us.

We truly believe that outside of this loud, overcrowded shelter, in a calmer foster or home environment, Alberto may finally be able to relax and feel safe.
If anyone out there has experience with dogs like Alberto, or even the heart to foster him and simply give him a chance away from the shelter, please consider helping him.

If you are interested in meeting Alberto, please submit an application.
Healthyheartsproject.org/adopt

Location
909 Martin Luther King Blvd., Warren, OH See less
