He’s the kind of dog who wants to be close—really close. Expect lap crawling (yes, despite his size), full-body hugs, and constant attempts to initiate play by rolling over, pawing, or gently nipping in true puppy fashion.

AJ is playful, silly, affectionate, curious, and smart—with a strong dash of lovable goofball energy. While he enjoys bursts of play and engagement, he’s also a total “tater” who sleeps up to 18 hours a day. He strikes a nice balance between moderate energy and serious couch-potato potential.

AJ enjoys high-energy, engaging play and can be very enthusiastic. He’s friendly and social, often standing up for hugs or attention. He’s a bit cautious at first with new dogs but warms up once he feels safe, greeting them with an optimistic tail wag. He has experience with a medium-sized dog (about 32 lbs). While he doesn’t always perfectly read when another dog is done playing, he does settle himself—sometimes with a few disappointed yodels before moving on. On leash and during pack walks, he’s non-reactive and relaxed, even when other dogs pass by.

AJ hasn’t been around kids yet, but based on his temperament, he would likely do well with children of any age. He’s very gentle and a big baby at heart. The only thing to note is his size—he can accidentally knock someone over with his body or tail due to his lack of spatial awareness. Cats have not been tested. He has been around chickens, and while his prey drive sometimes kicked in, it wasn’t consistent.

AJ does well on leash once he settles into the routine. New environments can make him cautious at first, and he may “potato” (sit and observe) for a few minutes before confidently moving forward. In the car, he’s a dream—he sleeps the entire ride.

AJ is mostly house-trained but still learning how to signal when he needs to go out. He’s picking this up by watching the resident dog, though consistency will be key in his new home. He is crate trained and sleeps through the night (7–8 hours). He may protest briefly with some yodels, especially when he realizes people are leaving, but he settles quickly and sleeps. He does show mild separation anxiety, which continues to improve with routine and reassurance.

AJ has no resource guarding issues with people and does fine eating near other dogs. He is a super chewer and needs durable toys and heavy-duty bones—anything less will be demolished in hours. Toy stealing happens occasionally, but it’s mutual and playful.

AJ has zero awareness of his size or surroundings and will absolutely flop himself right off a couch or bed, only realizing what happened once he’s already on the floor. He loves physical contact and always wants to be touching his humans. He’s truly a gentle giant derp in the best possible way.

AJ would do best with active, social people who enjoy playtime and affection. A home with a yard and toys would be a dream, but most importantly, he wants love and companionship. He has a naturally protective presence and would be a wonderful match for someone looking for both a best friend and a sense of security.

AJ is a sweet, loyal boy who just wants a home where he can love freely and be loved back. If you’re looking for a playful cuddle-bug with a big heart and an even bigger personality, Sir Derp may just be your perfect match.

***Listed BREED and AGE - We are taking our best guess & recommendations from our veterinarian on age, breed and size when fully grown.
