Ace's Story

Hi, Ace!

Ace is a 4 pound, 5 year old male chihuahua searching for his perfect forever home. Ace is white and red and has the cutest big furry ears. This tiny little man is a love bug if given time to warm up. He needs a home that will be patient with him, and if they do they will be rewarded with the best little snuggle bug ever.

Ace loves his people, you just need to let him approach you on his own terms! When he arrived at his current foster home, his foster mom set his crate down and opened the door and allowed him to come out on his own. Within five minutes, Ace was in her arms. Intake and the vet’s office were different stories; he tried to nip and bite everyone, but those times he was not allowed time to decide to trust those people around him. If you give him the time he needs, he’s a sweet snuggle bug! Ace gets along with all of the dogs in his foster home. He will follow his person around, jump into bed with them, and just generally acts like a goober to get all of the love he can! Ace tends to bark at random sounds like a typical chihuahua. We would not recommend Ace go to a home with younger kids as every introduction with Ace needs to be done the same way.

Ace HATES being left alone. If you leave him alone in a room all by himself, he howls. If you leave him with other dogs or take him with you, he’s a happy little camper.

He is almost fully house trained, with the occasional marking incident when a new foster is introduced. Otherwise, he happily goes outside to take care of business and uses pee pads if needed.

Ace came to us originally with severe pain in his mouth, to the point where the shelter thought he had a broken jaw. In January he received an extensive dental, with multiple extractions. During that dental surgery it was noted that the poor little man had multiple ulcers on the sides of his tongue and several fistulas developing. Ace initially recovered well from his dental, with everything healing up, and by the time he completed two rounds of antibiotics he was doing great.

Unfortunately in the last few weeks we noted some indications that Ace might be having pain in his mouth again, as well as the odor in his mouth returning. Ace was seen by our vet team again today and unfortunately was diagnosed with a condition called CUPS. The full name of this condition is Canine Ulcerative Paradental Stomatitis, and does require lifelong medical management with your veterinarian. Basically, Ace's body is having an immune response to the tartar it produces.

Medical management is the best tool, and includes pain management when necessary, steroids, and annual dental cleanings. The cure to this condition will be the loss of all of his teeth, which understandably is not in his best interest at this time as the remaining teeth he has are all in good condition.
Now the positive is that now that a management program is in place, Ace should live a completely normal life outside of needing meds and semi annual vet exams. This little man adores Ceasar wet dog food and even with ulcers in his mouth right now, nothing stops Ace from finding yak chews to nibble on and gobbling up his meals!

He is fully vetted and up to date on his vaccinations. He is heartworm negative and takes monthly heartworm prevention. Ace is also microchipped and neutered.

Ace’s adoption donation is $300.

If you are interested in the above dog, please do not email us and tell us that you are interested, but submit an adoption application. The link for the application is below.

To submit an application go here: http://www.chihuahua-rescue.com/adoption-application/

An application must be submitted and approved before a meet-n-greet can be scheduled.

Your current dogs/cats must be spayed or neutered unless a veterinarian has determined that your current pet(s) should not be fixed due to medical reasons. They must also be up-to-date on shots and on HW preventative.

Reference checks and a home visit are required so SE dogs can only be adopted in NC/SC, VA, TN, AL, MD and GA.
